Finally! Hurray!

I've spent waaaay to much time with my head back, wishing for something to happen.

Finally, it did!

In about three weeks, I should have some shade. Oh, happy day! :)

This is the longest, the slowest, and most painful this process has ever been. I've yanked trees out for doing this to me! But I've got a 15+ year investment in this tiger and we've had a drought, so he gets a pass.

I'm hoping tonight's forecast rain speeds things up! I have so many rooted cuttings all ready to be planted underneath that can't take full sun.

Is the emerald ash borer in your area?..kills ash trees..

Not yet, thank goodness! I've read some very sad stories about losing trees up north. :(

I had a reaaaaaally good, sweet cantaloupe for my fruit salad on Mother's Day, too.

Carol, your tree looks majestic! I am glad that you had a sweet cantaloupe, you never know till you open, I can tell by the smell most times.

Carol..just so you know..I have 22 ash trees(had 28..removed 6 ugly,dead etc..)some of mine are not leafed out..my maples, oaks, hickory etc are way ahead of my ash trees..they could be my slowest ones..your tree looks great..

Silvia, you're right. Often you can tell by the smell, but sometimes I get fooled. While we're on the subject, what's your trick for getting a sweet, juicy watermelon?

Nichol, that just makes me sick. I hate losing trees. Losing a perennial or a flower is one thing, but a losing tree - when you love gardening - is like losing a part of your garden family. I'm so sorry.

In all my concern about my ash, I did some reading and learned that ash trees are among the very last trees to leaf out - every year - across the country. I hope you get your leaves soon! Got a picture of those 22 beauties? We'd love to see!

PS. I got all of the rooted bloodleaf cuttings planted now that the shade has arrived. :)

Both of my parents are originally from Indiana - still have lots of cousins that live there - I'm a big Notre Dame fan - so glad you stopped by into our forum.

Thanks for taking time to post the pictures. Did you plant all 28 trees yourself? Or were some of them naturalized?

I brought home my little green ash from Walmart in winter of 2000. It was a Walmart bicentennial promotion: green ash trees grown from seed from a green ash tree growing at Eisenhower's birthplace in Dennison, Texas. "Direct descendants" - I still have the tag. The tree was on clearance at $8 and I brought it home in my Honda Accord, top of the tree sticking out the sun roof.

we've been here 12 years..this was a woodland where they removed just enough trees to build the streets and houses..I've planted Japanese maples, Kousa dogwoods, and Autumn Blaze maples but all of the ash trees were here..we retired a year ago and I daydream about moving to a warmer climate..would miss our little forest..

We just cut down 4 giant ash trees today.

sad to hear that you lost 4 big trees..we've been treating our trees since 2012..neighbors that haven't treated have been cutting trees down..emerald ash borer is a sad situation..

We have been treating the trees for 5-6 years too, but the top of the trees are gone without any leaves, huge branches would fall down during wind storms. They were huge, at least 40'-50' tall. It's very expensive to cut, but for everyone's safety it's time to let them go. I will plant some fruit trees (persimmon, jujube) next spring.

I hear you. It cost $4,900 to remove 6 trees today: 4 big ash trees, 1 big pine and one small maple (25’). I am done with big trees in this yard. I could get a brand new BMW 300 cc motorcycle for that much!

Yikes!!..I've spent $6,000 ($2000 3 times) for treatments so I feel your pain..I try not to think about it..wondering - do you enjoy more light or do you miss the shade desperately?..

I grow over 1000 roses, they can finally soak up the sun :-)

Yay!..a little silver lining from a disappointing situation..I wouldn't mind a bit more sun..that's a lot of roses!..I have over 500 hostas and it feels like a lot yet you DOUBLE that amount with your roses..

My goodness, 500 hostas! I only have 5. :-) Some of David Austin roses can take half shade if you want to try next year. I planted too many roses in my suburb yard, will have to move some to the country property next spring. A lot of work but the blooms and fragrance keep me going. Good luck with your ash trees. It sounds like you have a lot.

What a pretty garden! 22 Ash trees?! Very expensive indeed. We have used Bayers and Greenlight to treat our ash trees. I am wondering if there are others out there cheaper. If I find it I will let you know. Hopefully yours are in better shape than mine.

Thanks..we use TreeAge..it's injected..an arborist did it..since our last treatment a homeowner version became available..plan to do it ourselves..saves money..most of the trees still look good..a couple of them are a bit thin and will probably be cut down someday..

We finally had a tree service removed all the ash trees in the backyard, there is one more in the front yard, the town is going to take it down. How are yours?

Now we have some issues with maple trees at the country property, they’re about a hundred years old have tons of huge red black colored caterpillars , have to learn how to treat them........want to cut them down too and just grow fruit trees.

we bought all of our supplies in January to treat our trees..TreeAge, pump, plugs etc..$$$ but saved $400 doing this ourselves and the next treatment will save about $1300 since we'll own the equipment and will only need the chemical..the Arborjet representative in our area is coming to help us get started..we emailed a few times when deciding to treat our own trees and she offered to come when it's time to treat..the EAB situation makes me so sad..

I had a tree guy at my house yesterday. He said in the next couple of years they could all fall down! Really, or is he trying to make 3 grand?! He said 4 trees would come down. I love my shady back yard - the reason I bought my house 14 years ago. My trees make my back yard! I have had big branches come down, nothing that has caused any damage yet though.

My green ash tree is better than ever. It does drop a few branches in the winter but overall, it looks as healthy as ever. I hope yours continue that way, too!

Me, too! I read all about it when you posted a couple years ago - bookmarked the articles - and so far, so good.

I live in western SD. I have 5 medium ash trees. They have buds but the buds arent swelling and obviously not leafing out. All my other trees have leafed out. Whats going on.
