Piping is uncomfortable to crunch up on and hence they have grown out of favor for the envelop without trim especially in more modern or eclectic settings. Just call and tell them to change the order. If you are within 3 days of order this should be possible. Some even don't get the orders places for longer, so do call right away if you wish to change.

Whats a knife edge?

Envelop, just a single seam with no piping on it.

Welting tends to have a more traditional vibe, so if you're going with a cleaner, more modern look, a knife-edge is probably preferable. That said, I've used contrast welting on recent transitional projects--see below; much depends on the fabric and look you're going for.

I called the dealer and they think it's too late to change the order to eliminate the piping on the pillows, but they will call the manufacturer in the morning. Thankfully this is not a life-altering problem. :) #probablystuckwithpiping #butitsokay

Actually, Flo and Sabrina, knife edge refers to the construction of the pillow or cushion, not the trim. A knife-edge pillow is made by sewing together a top and bottom piece without a sidewall. So, a knife-edge pillow can, indeed, have piping.

I've always found that the pillows that come with new sofas are always a disappointment - they are too big, too flat, and just not worthy of space on the couch, so I end up buying new pillows more to my liking. Maybe you'll end up feeling the same, so the type of edge might be a moot point.

I make my own. I buy a few comfortable squishy down pillows meant for the bedroom and a few of the more traditional square pillow inserts, sew removable washable covers in a variety of styles and gorgeous fabric and then take a nap on my very comfy little nest.

So true mramsey. Although not on my formal sofa, I did this with my moms vintage rattan sofa for the sunroom. Perfectly fits the depth of the sofa and great for a nap. You can also add square to that to make it look less like a bed...

That said...op you are enquiring about the accent pillows and not the couch cushions, right?

This is stretching the far reaches of my limited knowledge, but I think "self-welt" is more modern, while "contrast welt" (different fabric) can be more traditional. I completely agree with kay kin that piping looks (and usually is) more expensive.

The pillows that I ordered for this sofa were custom, down-filled and in a different high-grade fabric (higher than the sofa fabric), so this was my one shot to get it right. I'm sure I'll be happy with them or won't even notice the welting after a week. :)

Well, I was able to change the pillow trim for a fee, which I did while being screamed at by the lady at the store. I'll assume that she wasn't happy about making a change to my order.

That is unacceptable. Doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling for the quality of this furniture when the customer service is that bad. @Sammy you are technically correct and I was using "short hand" descriptions.

It is a smaller store with 2 employees. I don't think she wanted to waste her time changing this order "just" for pillow trim when she "had 14 other calls to make and customers to tend to". I bought $7,000+ of furniture from them, but I guess you better not change your mind about any details!

Oh, poor baby. Maybe it would be easier to cancel the whole darn order. Really! You are the "customer", yes, the one with the money! I never. Maybe she was having some bad things happen in her life. Maybe the store is going under! Quite an attitude for a small store. It doesn't look to me like the sofa is anything totally special? It looks nice, but such an attitude doesn't bode well. Sure hope she was just having a bad day and not enough help!

We all understand bad days...we've all had them. But we need to leave them at the door when we start work. In these days of high competition fueled by the internet, everyone has to try a little harder....

UPDATE: The employee called me about 5:00pm today and apologized. She said she should not have spoken to me in that manner. She also informed me that there was a $140 Change Order fee and that the delivery of my furniture has now been delayed 3 additional weeks due to the change...kind of wish I had known about that prior.

For a pillow change? No really? $140, man they are not wanting you back as a future client are they. I can't believe that. Cancel this order, there is nothing but trouble coming your way on this. There are too many good products out there. She probably apologized so you wouldn't cancel given the news she had. Very sad. Not sure where you are in the "process", but I would back away from this as fast as possible.

Please don't do business with that store. Cancel your order, and do not pay a cancellation fee.
