I got a set of vanilla orchid vines for my birthday in December. Since then, even in the light of spring it has only grown aerial roots. When I first got them they were healthy for the most part. One didn't have new stem growth and the other ones stem growth rotted off. Then in around February they started to dry out. The leaves curled and some had to be taken off. It is planted in sphagnum moss, with the plant wrapped around a small tree fern totem. It has grown lots of roots, some of which have broken, some of that are getting long and thick in the moss. I am pretty confident that it is alive given the root growth, but when will a new part of the stem grow? I live in Portland, Oregon, the Pacific Northwest. We get winters that are too cold and wet. The spring is warm with rain and the summer can be hot depending on the year. There is always the chance for rain. Right now it in front of a window in my room. Should I take it outside once it gets warmer and summer begins? Should I fertilize it? It may be that it just takes time for a new stem to grow once it has a good root system. I know it is not the right environment at all but I want to try it without a greenhouse first. I will consider getting one if it seems like no progress can be made otherwise. Thanks for your help.
