I would need to see the wall behind where you stood to get a better understanding of the space and where we can move the stove, dishwasher and sink to.... Please post more photos, or a rough sketch of the room's floorplan.

I also would wait. The only place I see a spot for the cooktop is by the sink. ((Which is in a bad place also to me. )But I just don't see moving the cooktop as a huge improvement with the way everything else is. Looks like when the time is right you have a nice space to work with.

Throwing money at that now will take away from the gut that it needs. It needed the gut yesterday, but if you don't have the 63K to tackle it, make a savings plan until you do.

Agree, give yourself some time to decide and save your money. You are looking at major re-do. You might consider removing the built-in desk to make room for the cooktop.

Floors, counters, appliances, sinks are all in need of updates. Your cabinets look very substantial and well made but the angles are going to be hard to work into a new layout.

A kitchen designer that will come to your home and see the whole area looks would be a great investment.

There's a lot you can do now. You obviously have two closet pantries and the shorter built in one left of the fridge. For immediate impact, I would decide on a spot for a new cooktop, since you don't like it in the island. Either the desk area or the counter and pantry area near the fridge would work for that. Don't mess with the area that has plumbing even though you feel it blocks you from the dining area. If you can match your flooring, you could remove the island, but it may have storage you'll need if you remove the storage to convert another area for the cooktop. Your neutral countertop shouldn't be hard to match when you replace it after removing the cooktop. Meanwhile, remove the little railing above the uppers - that's a real dated look. Personally, I don't like knobs on lowers because they tend to catch on clothing and tear it. You might shop for replacement hardware handles. Would you rather have a chandy at the table? I hate for dust and cooling to ruin a nice meal.
