Hello , everyone I somebody bought me a gift of hydrangea from costco. I used to bought hydrangeas in pott the small ones from Home Depot , lowes , Walmart and etc. They all did well when I used to live in the part of town where my balcony hasperfex gentle sunlight and perfect shade so they all grew really well. However, I never have a luck with th bigger pots . i now live in new apartment that get hot sun during the day. What shall I do? I did some research back awhile and they said I can put the hydrangea by the balcony door and left the curtain open and that way they can slowly adjust to the heat and the sunlight slowly. I tired that many years ago they still die from overwatering and the heat coming though the glass balcony door. Please help. The heat in Los angles in summer is very strong as you can see on the picture the blooms are already burnt a bit when it was purchased

Sincerly ,

Hydrangealover

P.S. I will take a picture of my balcony tomrrow I am so afraid of overwatering them as well but for now I touch the soil they are still a little moist to touch

Finger test: insert a finger into the soil to a depth of 2-3" max and water only if the soil feels dry or almost dry. Or get a soil moisture meter and insert it into the soil to see if the pot needs watering. When done watering, tip the pot to get rid of excess water. Empty the drainage pan after 15-30 minutes or so. Do not go overboard with a large pot. Start with 1g size if you want; depends on how big this shrub is supposed to get. Keep the pot away from direct sun and a/c or heater vents. Place it in areas with bright shade.

A mophead like yours prefers morning un and afternoon/evening shade, especially during the summer months. If your balcony cannot provide that then you will either need to bring it inside or find a way to provide the shade in the balcony somehow.

Is the hydrangea living INdoors all the time? I didn't know you could grow them indoors.

Thank you luis_pr I will follow your advices and do my best with the watering. I have attached the picture of my balcony there are no shade at all so I may have to make a shady area for it some how . I put mother Teresa out in the balcony once and the sun burn it into crips . If I cannot provide shady area may I leave the hydrangea indoor by the glass door for morning sun the rest of the day and then take it out on the evening? I have touch the soil and it is a bit moist I will till it is completely dry to water it again.

littlebug, nop it is brand new and my friend just night it for me yesterday . I think I heave read an article long time ago that it is possible to grow the hydrangea indoor and in their pots instead of putting them in the ground . I will have to keep experimenting :)

They do not do indoors as well as they would do outdoors. If you cannot put it outside, you could leave it indoors such that it gets bright shade. Maybe 1-2 hrs of morning sun or something like that. Some source of ambient humidity might help since indoors can get quite dry and that does not help them. You could try what you describe but you may grow tired of moving it in and out so much after a few weeks of doing that daily. FYI: the angle of sun changes thru the year so be prepared to change the pot's indoor location now and then.
