What is this shrub?

We're in NE Iowa along the Mississippi River. It was here between a row of lilacs before we bought the property 12 years ago. While persistent and beautiful, does not invade, but likes to show up in pots of vacant soil. Photos are of one such. It is the first tree or shrub to leaf out in the spring. Very frost hardy. Mother shrub is about 12-15 ft. even though crowded among the lilacs. The blossom, though now white in the photo, eventually gets bigger and turns a shade of dark pink. Thanks.

It sure does look like Red Mulberry. Never saw it when I lived in Minnesota, just the common darker one. I have never noticed berries on my Red one, but maybe birds get them while still green. Will monitor this year. I realize all parts are poisonous except for the berries on all Elderberry varieties. But how about the tiny stem that connects to a berry? Ate them a lot as a kid with no problems, but can't remember if they disconnected easily from the stem. Do you know? Thanks.
