what maples did I buy

Another maple question from me. I bought 4 maples in a special deal. One of them is not what was advertised. Definitely not a lace. It think it is a Suminagashi because that one was on offer as well. Can anyone tell me if I am correct?

I also have doubts about another one. It should be a Phoenix but the leaf never started out pink and it is large and wide. Any ideas what this might be?

Both are grown from cuttings not grafts. I don't like the shape of the so called Phoenix so I'm turning it into espalier. If anyone is interested, I will keep you posted on how it goes.

Could be 'Suminagashi'.....could just as well be half a dozen other cultivars. Almost impossible to accurately ID most JM cultivars as the differences are sometimes extremely subtle. If Suminigashi was one of the ones being offered for sale, that seems like a reasonable assumption, provided there were no other deeply lobed red leaved forms for sale as well.

The second is definitely NOT A.p. 'Phoenix' but I can't tell you what it is :-)

Thanks. I'll stick with the Suminagashi assumption then, keeping in mind that it's just an assumption.

As for the 'Phoenix' not being Phoenix, no surprise there. I will let the seller know. It's probably a "Red wine".
