z5 is about half the US .... and very divergent ... can you give us a big city name ...

hosta love sun ... in theory .. we should say they are shade tolerant .... rather than shade dependent ....

nbd there.... its just how much water you can provide... and how early they start looking ugly, later in the season ... e.g. instead of looking ugly in september.. they might start looking ugly in august ...

also give us.. the hours of sun ....with a bit more specificity ...

and finally. what hosta you site in sun.. is a major variable .... e.g. blues wont stay blue in too much hot sun

I grow an 'Empress Wu' in full afternoon sun and it's growing like gangbusters. Just make sure you provide adequate water! BTW, I'm in zone 7/8, BUT, I'm north of the 49th parallel where the angle of the midday sun in summer is likely quite a bit lower than the angle of the sun in your zone 5. The angle of the sun dictates how intense it will be to the plant and consequently how well the pant tolerates full sun exposure. No doubt supplemental watering helps but there's not much you can do about the angle of the sun....

i didnt realize BC was this far north .. and the declination of the sun.. does allow full sun more so than further south ... go figure..

it just never registered that though so far north.. its z8 ... of course its air currents from the ocean etc ... that cause or allow such ...

i think i recall britain is near 60 degrees north.. and parts are z8 or 9 ... again.. the atlantic.. what they call the north drift or some such ...
