S&S definitely has HVX.

GS isn't showing any signs that I can see.

Be careful with your shovel when you dig out S&S. Be sure you sterilize it before you go near any other hostas.

Since it is peak growth season you can kill it with glyphosate and this will starve the plant and kill it from the roots out. Others will point you to the Hosta Society advice to dig it out. You don't have to worry about sterilizing the shovel before digging it out, just wash it thoroughly with Dawn antibacterial dishwashing soap after. I did an experiment last year using different strengths of glyphosate (RoundUp) on 3 hosta bunches and all three died. Normal strength took longer, I recommend using poison ivy strength glyphosate to quicken it. The entire plants root, and all have completely disappeared completely in each of the 3 tests. It will be perfectly safe to dig it up and plant more hosta in the Spring. If you do not want to plant anymore hosta, then dig it up, just make sure you sterilize any implements you use or have used on that plant. The only caveat against using glyphosate mentioned by those who recommend digging is that are worried about killing other plants. If you have other hostas adjacent to the infected hosta then you take an immediate chance of infecting the nearby plants. HVX cannot be transferred to another hosta without wounding the infected plant and another hosta. If you left it in place forever it would not infect other plants unless you wound both hosta u=involved Jon
