Could I have it planted too deeply?

Plant depth may possibly have an effect but after checking on my own stats re my Liberty, I think you may find what you are looking for next year.

Liberty in my garden receives sunlight equivalent to "all-day" (5-7 hours) and is surrounded by other plants close by, including being adjacent to a new 2016 Japanese Maple. I will include a photo... It was moved last year to this location early in the spring because it was going to require more space. It did receive sunlight from sun-up to at least 1:30/2:00 encouraging a more vigorous growth.

2014 - new with 1 division/shoot

2015 - 3 divisions

2016 - 3 divisions

2017 - 6 divisions --- it will be wonderful to see how full it will appear with the additional shoots.

In 2015 I was disappointed that my Liberty only had six eyes again. And then it exploded in 2016. And looked beautiful. I loved it. Here it is:

Hard to say if you have planted too deep without a photo. You could try top dressing with compost. Did it get enough water?

mountain man, how often and what years did you up-pot?

Only the once, about a month ago, it was almost solid with roots. That is my largest pot 16"x 12".

I am crazy for stats in relation to hostas and the ones quoted here will undoubtedly spur someone on to add this utterly gorgeous hosta to their collection!

Ok, I don't keep stats. To me that's a bit like cleaning windows or polishing the car. Life's too short.

Liberty and all it's relations are not fast growers but given time, 5+ years it will surely reward you.

Here's a pic from a couple of days ago with it's parent Sagae which has been divided and Brother Stephan which just needed a bigger pot to support it.

Liberty has never been divided, must be about 10 years old and is in a 50 litre pot.

If I had it planted in the ground I'm sure it would be even larger.
