There are literally hundreds of websites or articles online that discuss dealing with deer in the garden. Just Google a few. But I can sum them all up very easily :-) The only completely effective way to keep deer out of a garden is to fence them out........and with a pretty high fence. If that is not possible, then protecting individual plants with wire cages is an alternative. Obviously the cages will need to be arranged far enough from the plants that the deer cannot nibble through them.

Spray repellents are moderately effective as well but will need to be reapplied frequently (at least weekly or after heavy rain) and need to be alternated between several different products using different ingredients so that the deer do not become used to them and begin to ignore.

You can check with your cooperative extension for a list of deer resistant plants. Here is a link to Rutgers' list for NJ. It is important to remember, though, that if the deer get hungry enough, all bets are off.

The only other thing that will work apart from the advice above is a very good dog. I had a border collie that never chased them unless they were in the garden. If they were in the forest that was fine with him. The deer knew their place.
