When to Harvest

In 2015, my crazy nephew thought he'd clean out my mothers beautiful flower garden. Well in the mist of his cleaning he was throwing out amaryllis bulbs. Well I took them all and replanted four of them in one spot and the others in spots I would later move.

This is the mother plant in process of blooming:

I hand pollinated (something I learned from another GW post). Now I need to know when to remove the seed pods.

Thanks Fred. I had more from a white one but I miss placed them or my husband threw them out by mistake. However this will be a lot and I hope to store and plant these properly.

HI Cathy,

Definitely leave the pods on the plant until they start to split open by themselves, then cut them off and gently separate the seeds. It looks like you may have a bumper crop of seeds :-)))

Hi, you want to wait for your seed pod to start to turn yellow and split. It can take anywhere from 4-6 weeks for the seeds to be ready. When the pod looks like the pic below, cut it off and let it dry a few days. Be mindful of the wind, these seeds are so light a soft breeze will blow them away.

Of course that is subject to change based on your weather and the variety you have.

Isn't it exciting when your seedpods get to the stage where you can tear them open and see what spills out, like in the picture above!!!
