May blooms

last modified: 9 years ago

Holy smokes, I just went through the April thread and couldn't believe how far along everyone's blooms are! Robert, really? Mock orange flowering already? Leaves just came out on mine.

Anyway, I may be late to the party this year but things are starting to pop!

R. 'Venus' is getting more of a fragrance this year. Still quite light though - gorgeous huge flowers nevertheless.

V. carlesii smells wonderful, wafting strongly around the front garden:

Not fragrant but it's alive!

Jasminegal, I've thought about buying one. My plants from Accents have grown soooo slow haha. I might pot them all up again because most of them have done nothing. My jasminum molle from accents just started to grow and I forgot to water it and it fried. I'm hoping it comes back! Ahh it had a bud and everything..sad.

I'd probably buy it from Gardino's if I had to pick, even though they can be pricey. Their plants are always huge and look soo healthy, more so than anywhere I've ordered online.

Because I'm an enabler and love how big Almost Eden's plants are..

I won't tell you then my molle is in 7 gallon pot, 6 yr old and almost 6 ft Tom *wink* Molle is a very resilient plant. Even though leaves are gone and the stem is still alive it will still make new nodes. Hopefully it will do this and come back for you. True gardino is pricey but plants are exceptional.

Robert I somehow forgot about almost eden plants. Lol...aren't we all enablers for each other :) Just imagine had we all be living in each other's vicinity what damage we would cause to our wallets *grin*.

Robert just an update on scentsation. It has not bloomed for me yet but has started nicely climbing the net which I have placed for it. I think in this season itself it is going to cover my deck stairs.

Robert you really are an enabler. I love looking at their pictures and reading their descriptions. I've ordered from them once. I bought a shredded white brug and it was a nice starter size with a strong main stem and great roots. I've potted it up for the second time now because some of the leaves yellowed and fell off so I checked the roots and it was slightly rootbound. I hope it takes off..the young brugs really struggle in the heat here, especially in a pot. It takes a little work to keep them looking good. And I overfertilized them their last watering and it showed immediately, I scorched dalai but he's okay..

Jasminegal, I would say I'm a little jealous but I bet you really love that plant and enjoy its scent! I'm glad that I have other plants to keep me happy in the meantime. And I really hope it does what you say, I think it will come back. Roots and main stem look fine although some branch tips have fried. Time will tell :)

Haha. It would be dangerous if we all lived close to each other. :)

Jasmine, congrats that your honeysuckle is growing. Interested in your scent report when it blooms.

Tom, was out in the backyard just now and caught whiffs of Dalai in the air so maybe a big one will waft!

Brian, I've tried a few hoyas but so far haven't found one that wows me. H. australis smelled like chocolate which I don't care for when it comes to flower scents. H. lacunosa had a generic florist shop scent though I know there are many cultivars and I just got mine from Lowe's. H. obscura 'Major' smelled like cucumbers or something forgettable. My latest local find is H. pubicalyx 'Pink Silver' but it's yet to bloom for me. Would love to try some that wow me. :)

Super excited to find one of my Jasminum sambac 'Belle of India' had two blooms tonight. Of course I plucked the tiny flowers to enjoy the sweet scent next to my bed.

Robert I agree it would be dangerous. That's good to hear about Dalai, maybe it would scent up a back porch nicely. What does it smell like? I would have plucked them too. I was hoping for a big flush of belle of india flowers but my plant is rootbound and I can't keep it hydrated but I really don't want to keep potting it up constantly so I may put it in the ground, I just don't know where to plant it.

And I agree with you about hoyas..my lacunosa 'ruby sue' doesn't impress me at all. Generic flower shop scent is a perfect description. It's ok. I don't love it, don't hate it. Maybe if it wafted I would enjoy it more. Same with australis, my clone from accents smells lightly of chocolate. I read many times it has a very strong scent but mine was very weak. And I've read the scent described as powder, honeysuckle, spicy, never chocolate. I wonder if there's better clones. I'm hoping it's more fragrant this fall. I'm thinking you may be more impressed with pink silver, pubicalyx are known for their fragrance. My royal hawaiian purple hasn't bloomed so I can't report, but I hope I do like it. I have read they also smell like chocolate though..I hope there's more notes to their scent. When compacta blooms, the first night it smells like chocolate with undertones of a scent like dracaena fragrans or honeysuckle, although this yummy scent doesn't last long. It turns to cheap chocolate candy wrappers and then kind of like sweaty socks.. :) End of rant.

Dang it, Tom. I knew you were gonna ask me for a scent report. Laugh.

I'm not good at this but I'll say I think you'll like Brugmansia 'Dalai Lama's scent. It has base notes of B. suaveolens, sort of lily like scents plus I can get whiffs of almonds. We'll just have to wait until yours blooms and get your report! :)

Loved your hoya rant. Rant on, my friend. I want plants with amazing scents.

I want amazing scents too but i also need plants that can cope with rain no sun for days more rain cold temps in the summer as well as freezing temps in the winter! add to that sky high electricity cost!!!! with 60-70% of the best fragrant plants being tropical :( my rant over ;)

My best friend lives in UK and I absolutely understand what you mean Fragrant. She cherishes every single sunny day and keeps on posting pics of her basking in sunlight :)

All of you flowers are very gorgeous. These are my Jasmines.

Robert, you knew I had to! Your scent report sounds very intriguing. I love lily and almond like scents. Can't wait for it to bloom for me. It's very easy for me to go on rants...I try to keep the word count of my posts to a minimum but sometimes it's hard for me, there's a lot more where that came from lol. We all want plants with amazing scents, the more the better, right? I can't wait to find a brug that really knocks my socks off. And hoya :)

I am going to rant about my Madagascar jasmines and jasmine voluible which I have since 2 yrs and never seem to bloom. Voluible grows leaves but no blooms :( I am done for now *grin* Maybe they will now since they are going to be in trash pile otherwise!

Jasminegal, you're not alone! Madagascar jasmine (stephanotis) is one of the worst for refusing to bloom! I hear soo many people say this. I bought mine with buds if I remember correctly and it hasn't bloomed since I potted it up. It's grown 5x its original size and nary a bloom in sight. I think I've had it over 2 years. They say it needs to be rootbound, I don't know if this is true. Mine should be close to rootbound by now. It won't stop growing but no blooms. I fertilize, it gets plenty of sun, I don't know what the cause is. I could never bring myself to trash it though! :) I hope your stephanotis and volubile bloom!

& I'm not against threatening plants in order to get them to bloom..I've done it once or twice (all the time) ;)

Melody, love all your sambac jasmines.

Tom, I want to enable again and point out that Sommer Gardens has restocked Vermilion Sky. We could compare scent notes! ;)

Oh lord Robert, I feel like I'm already in over my head with the new dalai and xena, plus a noid that needs repotting and one I have in the ground that's now coming back from the roots after a drought. It's definitely near the top of my list though. How did the plant look that you received? Do you have any pics?

It's about 27 inches and doing great so far. Come on, what's one more brug? ;)

Found another Belle of India jasmine bloom tonight and plucked it. This time I'm hiding it from my roommate's dog since he ate one flower last night. Laugh.

Looks like humans are not only the fragrant plant lovers near you Robert :) You have competition now..smell and enjoy them before the dog gets to it :)

Wow, very nice looking double stemmed plant! My xena looks like the bigger stem but it's only a single stemmed plant right now. Yours looks like it should Y rather quickly. Animals are funny. My dogs and cats will sniff blooms but have never ate one. He must have liked the scent! :)

Got Pink champagne brug from logees. Don't see much info on it though. Waiting to smell the fragrance! Forgot to add getting b.nitida and b.jamaicensis as well :)

    last modified: 9 years ago

I really want to get b jamaicensis. I just saw that Accents has brunfelsia isola now, never saw it on there before. It makes me want to place an order !

Maybe we should all get this one going on this guys description

I love Vermont Hoyas..I don't think I'm familiar with that plant, it's beautiful! Here are some other Hoyas I've read are very fragrant, although I can't confirm but I see these come up often: verticallata, cagayanensis, magnifica, albiflora, calycina, Estrella falls, red buttons, shepherdii, Thomsonii, odorata, nummalaroides, Griffithii, acuta, parasitica, pottsii clones, citrina, incrassata, cummingiana, golamcoana, serpens, khroniana, alagensis, monetteae, minibelle, shepherdell, lambii, bhutanica

Night fragrant: macgillivrayi, archboldiana, megalaster, imperialis, onychoides, fungii

Nice fragrance but unsure of wafting ability: anulata, subcalva, pachyclada, pusilla, coriacea, pentaphlebia, paziae

Tom you are really enabling me to get a hoya now... not that I did one though for my jungle! Lol...

'Venus' is one of the original Loderi clones.

Jasminegal, I would definitely get one..every jungle needs a hoya ;)

I so love this plant it is one i really look forward to flowering every year!! And this year one bud has decided to flower early! Normally flowers in June and July and fragrance is amazing! There is a Magnolia grower over here and i think he sums it up perfectly " There can be few other plants perfectly hardy in these isles with flowers as incredibly fragrant as these. They are creamy-white with a central boss of deep red stamens and smell like nothing else. A cut flower in a room is overpowering.

    Magnolia x Wieseneri

Aaahhh fragrant2008, you're killing me with the wieseneri. My big want as I'm obsessed with magnolia family. I have a sieboldii and really love it, has a nice lemony fragrance with very similar flowers. Seems Wieseneri is only available in Europe:(

    last modified: 9 years ago

It is a true stunner Maggie maybe i can try and take a cutting see if i can ship a small rooted plant over to you. Not sure if customs will stop it :(

    Trachelospermum asiaticum cultivar.

Jasminegal, mine's just took a break from blooming. I still love the scent! I have a variegated one and it smells quite different.

I am anxiously waiting for the rest of my Prince Promise buds to open. The scent is more like Easter Lilies but this year I can detect some of the oriental lily scent in it too. It's a lovely combination that is the right strength, not too strong, not too light.

Dar, can't believe your lilies are already blooming!

Jasminum sambac 'Mysore Mulli' has been throwing some exquisitely stacked blooms lately. Of course again I can't decide if I love it more than Belle of India. ;)

This is the first time I am growing Mr. Lincoln. Love the heady rose fragrance.

Dar I am glad you still love the scent. Mine has just started blooming. Every year I think do I need it and it starts blooming that time. It makes me smile with that beautiful yellow and I remember why I love it...lol!

Robert even I am noticing the mysore mulli is blooming with stacked blooms. My last bloom did that as well.

My lovely alyssums which were just getting ready for wonderful show gotten eaten up by caterpillars :( All the buds gone. Plants are fine but have to wait now!

Fragrant, that is a very generous offer, very kind. I don 't know what customs would do though ;(

Every once in a while I search the web hoping someone is carrying it. Hope springs eternal....

    last modified: 9 years ago

Robert! These longiflorums and hybrid LO tend to bloom around two months earlier than oriental lilies (ignore those in the background, they were bought in bud from Trader Joe's lol).

Jasmine gal I love the scent or mr lincoln. Darn those caterpillars.

This orchid has a scent that is so strange. To me it's like the smell of cut wood, cedar, cologne, a little plastic mixed in. But it only has a scent around noon when it is hot.

Your orchid is gorgeous and your scent description is intriguing!

Brugmansia 'Forestville Double' finally bloomed for me. It has a nice sweet lily like scent that I've smelled in other brugs.

I'm thrilled that Buddleia 'Tutti Frutti' is blooming. I love its rich purple color and it has a strong typical butterfly bush honey like scent which I love but I know not everyone does.

osmanthus fragrans, can lightly smell it walking up to it. Fragrance is beautiful if you stick your nose in the blooms. Wish I had noticed it was blooming before it got sun scorched :)

    last modified: 9 years ago

Robert, that brug bloom is amazing, if not a little sun scorched ;) like my osmanthus. It's been so ungodly hot. How strong is the fragrance compared to Chuck? Does it waft?

So far it's not nearly as strongly scented as Charles Grimaldi but I will let you know should I catch its scent in the air. :)

Speaking of wafting plants I can smell Buddleia 'Tutti Fruitti' without having to stick my nose up to the bloom. My roommate said it attracted a hummingbird today but of course I missed it since I was out shopping for hummingbird plants. Laugh.

Rosa 'Sweet Chariot' — The flower is about the size of a quarter.

Noid cactus hybrid. No fragrance on this one but I bought a bunch of them about a year ago, gambling for scented ones. The only for sure fragrant one I found is E. subdenutata (Domino cactus).

Alyssum carpet of snow with alyssum wonderland purple. Carpet of snow is more fragrant than the purple ones. Have you all noticed that any white flower is more fragrant than the colored ones..or is it just my nose? Have a wonderful long weekend my US friends :)

    last modified: 9 years ago

White flowers usually do seem to be more fragrant. The only exceptions I can think of are roses (red may win) and orchids, even with Hoyas the white flowers are usually the most fragrant ones! Enjoy your weekend Jasminegal! & Everyone else :)

My nose has started to get some work out.. belle has started its wonderfully blooms. Stella de oro daylily and brunfelsia australis. Not able to detect too much of its scent..very light floral maybe once the sun is strong will be able to detect more.

Enjoying sniffing the bounties of my garden. :)

Passiflora x belotii and Jasminum sambac 'Mysore Mulli'.

Jasmine nitidum..the star shaped blooms make me so happy..the lovely little ladybug on b.australis. The whole plant is with blooms and the yard is wafting with their fragrance and also Mr. Lincoln :)

    last modified: 9 years ago

Jasminegal J. nitidum is a lovely plant, some of the prettiest leaves and flowers in the jasmine family, I just wish the fragance was more potent! They use it as a landscaping plant a lot here in central Fl. Cute ladybug too. & I love Mr. Lincoln. Mine isn't blooming atm, maybe it's too hot! But it just grew a bunch of new leaves. And I still need a b. australis!!

Robert, I used to have that vine! It was from Lowe's. Blooms smell lemongrassy or tea like? Had to cut it down because it was a monster, it was taking over the whole railing and weighing it down, I think pulling it was pulling it from the foundation. And those mysore blooms are beatiful.

True Tom.. nitidum is a beautiful plant. I smell it early in the morning and I love that clean smell. I was lucky enough to capture that ladybug :)

I want to so get passion flower vine but the invasive nature of it keeps me away from it.
