Please help with design of cabinets for rec room!

Our house was finished about a year ago--and we still haven't gotten around to putting cabinets/bookcases/something in the rec room in the basement (my husband likes to refer to it as the theater room, but as you can see by the pictures, it has been taken over by the 18 month old)

I am thinking of doing something around the TV--but the white squares on the walls are the speakers. Those can't be covered, obviously. So maybe a line of cabinets below the television and floating shelves on either side of the TV?

And the color would either be the same white as the trim (white dove) or a medium/dark wood to kind of warm up the room a bit (there are no windows, it's a true basement)

Waiting on really furnishing the space until we decide what to do with the TV wall. The couch is definitely staying (it's a power recliner on each end!) but the end tables are just ikea ones we had lying around. Behind the couch is another ~1/3 of the room, that has a desk/work area currently. It looks bad so I did not post pictures of it... haha...

I never noticed that the TV wasn't centered to the wall before (it seems to be centered to the lights?)

That makes the shelving size/location kind of weird, huh?

What is it that you need to store? Do you have video equipment, such as a Blu-ray player, cable box, etc that need to go under the TV? If so, I would put a large, long rectangular coffee table with bottom shelf under the TV and perhaps a couple of pedestals under each wall speaker. I would not put shelving beside the TV. If you are considering changing the layout later, it would be best to use movable pieces of furniture rather than built-in shelving. You could possibly get an armoire or a cabinet for the wall to the right of the TV. I would not put anything closed on the TV wall because of all the outlets/jacks that you have, which I assume need to be accessible. I have a small dresser sort of beside my TV, and I store DVDs in that, although most of my DVDs are now in books because the cabinet got filled up fairly quickly.

Not sure how it would affect the sound, but you could possibly hang tapestries over the wall speakers. Does the bass come from the box in the lower left corner?

I am not sure what we would store there, to be honest. It would probably just be filled with miscelleanous things/books/etc. Probably toys!

The subwoofer is indeed the box on the bottom left. I would like it to have a home that isn't just in the middle of the floor.

All the TV components are in a room that's accessed through a door directly opposite of the TV wall, hooked up via infrared or something.... so no electronics need housing besides the subwoofer you see.

I am open to furniture! That would be a lot cheaper! haha.

I was thinking perhaps canvas paintings over the speakers, not sure that would really affect the sound...?

I would try holding canvas paintings over the speakers and see what that does to the sound. The speaker below the TV probably has the most treble, and that one should not be obscured, but I think it might be okay to put fabric/canvas over the side speakers. My subwoofer had a tendency to walk away from the wall during a loud movie, and so I had to make a foam cushion for it to keep it in place.

Since you do not need to put video equipment under the TV, you could put pretty much anything there. I noticed that the cabinets you put in with Photoshop covered up part of your subwoofer.

Is your TV centered in the wall? It appears to be further from the left wall, the wall with the furr down.
