Front garden bed

So we have about 6 feet of space in our front garden bed that really needs some sprucing up! We have azaleas that died due to the full sun. We are zone 7. So I am thinking gardenias but what else! We need to hide that water meter! There are gladiolus in the back against the foundation. There Should we do a tree on each side of the entry?! There was a tree before though it had died right after we moved in. (Nevermind my poor peony that got diseased after a bad spell of rain.)

First, your azaleas died because they were planted too close to the house. All of your plants are too close to the house. Nothing should be planted with in 3 feet of the foundation or under the eaves of the house. Whoever did your sidewalk was a complete idiot because that is a totally unacceptable installation and creates all kinds of other problems. Now you have a sahara dessert of dirt, rock and nothing living because its too close to the house, under the eaves AND being cooked with all the heat from the house and sidewalk. Unless and until you address that problem you are wasting your time and energy attempting to plant anything between the house and sidewalk. Your only option is to install a rock garden and then put the plants on the other side of the sidewalk.

Gardenia huh? Better read this hilarious thread from the old GardenWeb.

I'd go with really tough annual flowers in that spot. Annual vinca can stand just about anything. Plant lots of spring bulbs too. Your nice house doesn't need a fringe of foliage to hide the foundation and that water meter is not ugly at all. Is it even okay to have a plant in front of the other meters?

Maybe post your question on the GardenWeb area of HOUZZ?

Maybe consider a small tree on the front lawn to help shade the area in question?

Yes you can't plant vinca, but who ever designed that front walkway so close to the house lacks any understanding of plantings. They were in bed with the terminate exterminator. Bad planning, bad design and it shows in the lack of curb appeal of this house landscape wise.
