Yeah I looked i over and couldn't find a graft line on it like my bigger meyer has. It looks really good but just shockingly small haha. I checked it for scale and other stuff but couldn't find anything. I rinsed it off and set it in the sun. It won't be until friday until I can repot it.

Its adorable! it's only slightly bigger than my very first meyer I had many years ago when I had no clue how to raise it (RIP tiny meyer) I am sure that it will grow and thrive in your care! I read through the thread and I may have missed it but where did you order these from? $5 is certainly a good deal for a rooted cutting.

Hope it's not a seedling. Most likely a rooted cutting.

Sammers- I bought this from Michigan Bulb. I watch MB and Gurneys in December and January online. They always run sales with free shipping and I snag a lot for cheap! I also got roses, a hibiscus, and 20 strawberry plants. I wish I would've bought the roses at Menards but these are supposed to super hardy and pretty. We shall see haha!

Dave- that was my initial first thought! I hope this wasn't grown from seed.

Amanda, TOO FUNNY! That is exactly what I do too. I watch them along with Jackson and Perkins and buy when I see anything cheap. I never thought to look at those places for citrus though. At Logee's. you would pay over 12 dollars for a cutting like that if not smaller. Good deal and nice looking tree. It will produce fruit that little too)

Mike- Bargin hunting is the best haha. My inbox and mailbox are always full of various plant catalogs and deals. It's soooo hard to say no! I love growing plants and they know it. Haha. They are after me.

I just inspected my new Meyer and there is a 5 in piece that is definitely the cutting part that they rooted. Whew. Not grown from seed.

The key lime and two tangerines will be this small, too. My kids will have to wait for the fruit but the waiting makes it taste so much better! :-)

Sammers- I forgot to mention that with these companies if you order out of season you have to wait until spring for them to ship. It's a pain but the price is so cheap that I don't mind. Burgess also has citrus trees but I have not bought from them. They never offer free shipping soooo........ haha.

Thanks Amanda! I will keep an eye out for them. I don't mind at all if they ship later. I feel like these would be good plants to give as gifts or experiment with potting medium/ fertilizer/etc. I feel bad saying i'd experiment on baby trees but you gotta figure it out some how, and a $5 risk is better than a $45 one.

Thats exactly how I feel. I can grow lots of plants but citrus has been a whole new ball field and until I feel confident I will stick to my baby trees. I do love my meyer from RBF. If I hadn't already ordered these trees I wouldve bought a key lime and ponderosa from them. I need to figure out my winter situation before I get too many more!

Amanda, before getting a ponderosa, I would get an Italian variety of lemon. Harris has really nice trees for $20 and the Bearss lemon is supposed to be excellent because of its very aromatic peel. I have one but no fruit yet...

Gold nugget (left), Villafranca lemon (right)it's hard to see from this pic, but I took it to show Amanda how fast they grow. The large tree in the middle black pot is my ST lemon. I think I got that tree at this time last year. There's lots of green, but look at how tall and wide it is. It is taller than me now! Granted, she is still filling in from winter, but I find it amazing how much growth they can put on in one year.Genoa lemon (left) - 1 year old tree. On the right is my Seville orange. I bought that tree late March last year and it was as small as the Genoa. Look at the difference!aerial view of canopyI was able to pot two of them. The GN will have to wait till Amazon sends me the reptibark I ordered. The Villafranca was root bound and had an extensive and healthy root system. I took a long time and rinsed off the peat mix as much as I could (I got 90% off) and even trimmed some of the bottom roots that were circling the pot. I hope that was ok. From right: Genoa, Villafranca, and GN.

WOW Laura!! Those trees look like a good buy! That growth rate is impressive. Im sure that your care plays a huge part of that! I can not believe the difference in size in only one year. Amazing! I am using your growing tricks so I will be happy even if I get only a fourth of the growth!

Quick question- I was planning on soaking the trees for a little bit to loosen up the soil in the root ball. Would that be ok or will it unnecessarily stress the tree? I am just remembering when I repotted my calamondin and the roots are so dense and compact! I was so scared of hurting the poor thing.

Thanks guys. Brian, we can compare notes on growth, although mine will never reach the mammoth size of yours. Amanda, I've never soaked the roots for a prolonged period. You can certainly rinse them in a bucket when you're removing the old mix. I did not do that this time...just used the hose. Perhaps others here can help you with the soaking question bc I am not sure. Amanda, yours will grow just as well. Those lights I used in winter were great! Not as great as a greenhouse, but will do for me.

Brian, you should dig up that pic you showed me a while back of one of your trees (the tango perhaps?). It was not that big when you got it only a few years ago, and now it is a monster. I am sure Amanda would really enjoy those pics.

Brian and Laura your trees look great! I can't wait to see how they grow! I am hoping that FW finally gets some Santa Teresa's back in stock so I can add an Italian lemon to my collection. And thank you Laura for showing some comparison photos of your trees from last years size to this years size. I helps me have hope that this year my trees will take off.

Amanda - when I re-potted my last tree I filled a 5 gallon bucket with lukewarm water and some Superthive (I'm not sure it helped or hurt) submerged the root ball in it for about 3-5 minutes then swished it around in the water until most of the soil was washed off the roots, took about 5 mins of swishing. Then I took a gallon of water in a jug and poured the stream into the areas that still had compacted bark stuck to it and that got the last of big chunks out. The only thing left were bark pieces that the roots had fused to so I left them. I like how it turned out to be mush less manual manipulation of the roots and I had virtually no breakage. I don't think the roots were in water long enough to hurt anything. As long as no one tells me I shouldn't I think this is how I will bare-root from now on.

Finished my last final this morning and came home to my two new tangerine trees! They are nice and green. I'll post a picture of them when I get a minute. My brain is fried and it's going to be a close call whether I keep my A or not. I'm beyond stressed out. I got a B on my final and I know it's going to pull my grade down a bit.

Oh I bet those trees will put on some size in no time! I feel like since they are on their own roots and not a dwarfing root stock they should grow much faster! My Washington Navel rooted cutting from HD is trying to set well over a dozen fruit already, people aren't kidding when they say the cutting knows its age regardless of its size. I won't let it keep the fruit but the blossoms smell the best! I bet that your trees will put out some blossoms later in the summer if they were taken from a mature tree.

Yeah I am extremely happy to have some new trees, even if they are babies! It is expensive to get trees shipped to Indiana from the big suppliers. I will just be even more excited the first time they bloom and fruit! My kids are super excited bc they remember the blueberry bushes being little but now they are big and make a lot of blueberries! Hopefully I can instill the gardening bug in them.

Now I am just waiting on the key lime and GN to show up!

They are in 2 in pots. The GN should be a little bigger, I think. I got the smallest one at FW bc there was a $15 difference in shipping and I just read on this forum somewhere that the smaller trees adjust better to new environments and grow so fast that they catch up to the bigger trees in no time. All four of these little ones were $5 each w/ free shipping.

Amanda where did you get those little trees? I've never seen those little guys before. They will do great, I'm sure! The FW one year old trees are very nice and do grow quickly.

Michigan Bulb.com. I ordered them back in December/January on sale. That's why I was so excited when I got the email that they had finally shipped out. It's just a Mother's Day miracle that they all can this week with the GN. Haha. My original Meyer lemon and my now big calamondin came from Gurneys. Those trees where a little bigger than these new ones from Michigan bulb but not nearly as green and healthy. These places do not have a big variety of citrus but carry the common ones.

Oh Mikey I so love this time of year, it's the time of year when you treat yourself to something new and there happens to be a lot of new out there I just have to learn self control so difficult. Mikey have you treated yourself to anything new and if so would love to see a pic.

latest pics 2016 and they have grown at least 6 to 12 inches this winter . They don't stay small for long for sure .

WOW! They are huge now! That is something special Brian! I cannot believe how big those are! I bet that green house of yours plays a big part. I might need one of those in the future. I was born in Hawaii (navy brat) and I find myself pulled to the tropical plants! Those trees are gorgeous and I can only hope that my trees will one day be that big and beautiful! So pretty. That fruit looks amazing!

There is also Burgess Seed Co, but I have never ordered from them. I have filled my online cart up so many times though! haha I have just never pulled the trigger. They also have some nice looking tomato/pepper varieties.

Thanks Laura and Amanda it really is fun watching the tree's grow. I have done very little trimming , every year I say I am going to but it never happens I don't have the heart to cut the fruit off . This year I have no choice or they will never fit back in the greenhouse.this upcoming fall and I have to make room for the 2 new Gold Nuggets and who knows I have 14 new pots to fill lol.

My GN came yesterday! It even has a fruit on it. It looks like it is gearing up to flower again, I can see some buds starting to form. It looks a little pale but I'm sure some foliage pro will take care of that quick!

and my new lime tree. I thought it was a key lime but it says Mexican lime haha it is a teeny but bigger than the Meyer and has roots sticking out of the bottom of the container. He will be the first to be repotted haha.

They look great! Your right and some foliage pro will turn those trees green before your know it. I also learned not so long ago that Mexican lime is another name for key lime. Like bearss and Tahitian or Persian limes are all the same.

So reptibark floats haha. I put the whole bag into a half whiskey barrel to soak it and it floated to the top. So funny. I'm going to go back outside and stir it in a bit.

bark is very light and easy to carry up to the rooftop garden and down. Just add perlite and compost and a lead weight to hold your tree down.

Very nice Amanda love your Gold Nugget and it has a fruit amazing I heard they take awhile to fruit very nice plant and the others look terrific to congratulations . We brought the tree's out today huge job but glad it's all done.

Amanda, the GN looks great!! Brian - YEAH! So happy you got your trees out! I can only imagine how happy you are (and how happy they are to be in the sun). Now you can hose them off. I hope you get the scale under control now that they are out. Enjoy them and please post progress pics (all of you!).

Laura the tree's need such a wash a few of my tree's have scale messy . Sunshine lol its the weekend it's never sunny on the weekend we worked in the pouring rain today at least it wasn't snow .

Steve 2 weeks to go then we flick the switch on the pool heater hopefully we will have the sun by then .
