Mexican Feather Grass? in SoCal

This grass was here when we bought the house recently. I'm pretty sure it's Mexican Feather Grass. It is really quite pretty but it is unbelievably invasive. We're constantly pulling the baby ones by the dozens (if not hundreds), as we don't want it to be a complete ground cover. We'd prefer something that is sparse. If we could have this exact plant, but without the weeding, that would be ideal. Should we replace it with Pink Muhly?

Is there a specific time of year this should be done?
