Nice ! We looked at a home in Lebanon , loved it but it wasnt the right time . But we ended up out in burns , 40 min west of Nashville. Tennessee is such a great place to live !

See we even have the same picks for clematis. I have a baby Rhapsody. I planted it in shade but it has not grown. I think I need to move it to a pot in the sun.

Amazin- are there any great nurseries you recommend out your way ? We don't have much out here. Hewitts sells Austins for 28$ and thats awesome . Not sure if you have heard of Moore and Moore on hwy 100 but the Clem's are 30$ a piece and roses $50!! Yikes

No, sadly, I mostly haunt the Lowes and HDs around here searching for deals. I did get an Austin Lady Gardener at Lowes for $15 last week -- half price on the "needs TLC" rack. But Growild is out your way, if you like natives. They are mostly wholesale, but they have spring and fall sales every year. And are you the one who reminded me about Iris City Gardens? They are also west of Nashville. I haven't been there, but I've heard good things -- I really want to take a look one of these days.

I'll have to check out Hewitts one of these days too!

amazin - I cannot believe I've never heard of iris city gardens! It's close to me so I hope to check it out this week. I'm not an iris fanatic but I appreciate them in others gardens and it sounds like a nice afternoon! And growild is right down the road from us but I haven't been to their sale yet . I Need to . I don't know why with such great growing conditions and long seasons we don't have better or more garden centers! When I lived in Pennsylvania there were so so many . Everywhere.

Let me know about Iris City Gardens! They do more than iris, and I bet it's beautiful right now.

And for garden centers, yeah, I know. I lived in Knoxville for more than 20 years, and even a town so much smaller than Nashville had good garden centers. Of course, I haven't spent much time driving around Nashville to look for what's there in town now -- I did grow up there, but I haven't actually *lived* there since 1985. For a while there was a really great spot for collectors on Thompson Lane, but that guy was all about collecting and I'm sure not enough about making money -- he didn't stay in business long!

There is a fairly good place between Lebanon and Mt. Juliet -- Needham's -- that's worth checking out if you're over this direction, but probably not worth making a trip for. I don't remember them ever selling clems, though.

And if you're into water plants, especially lotus and waterlilies, there's a guy who sells about a bazillion types from his house not too far from here. He also sells online.

I really need to spend a few days checking out all the current places in Nashville -- sometime when I have money burning a hole in my pocket. LOL.

Amazin - have you noticed a scent on rhapsody ? We were discussing this clem on the rose forum and it was mentioned. Mine was down to one ragged bloom and I could smell a faint honeysuckle or soapy smell! I'm interested in what you have to say about that . Also since it's done blooming should I prune it back now ?

I didn't notice any last year, but I most likely didn't even check. It hasn't bloomed yet this year. Will try to remember to sniff it this year!

As for pruning, I'm very lazy about that. Some people get very persnickety about always pruning new clems, or following their own favorite pruning schedules to the letter. Not me! I'm mostly a tough-love kinda gardener. My big thing is to plant the clems deep -- after that, they're pretty much on their own. ;-) But if you want to prune it, right after bloom would be a good time for it.

Lilyfinch, I am so sorry to hear about your Rhapsody. Hopefully she will learn soon about respecting the garden. My son would pick every flower when he was 1 and 2, but now that he is 3 he knows not to hurt the flowers and step on them. He even asks before watering the plants now. He also loves to squeeze rose and peony buds but has learned to be gentle.
