I accidentally knocked a 2" long branch tip off of a fig, possibly 'petite negra', and had read a method of propagation that seems to be working:

I wrapped the cutting in moist paper towel so that only 1/4 inch of the apical bud was showing. This went into a ziplock baggie, placed in a medium-bright area indoors with NO direct sun. Just make sure it doesn't get dry. There should be roots started after a couple of months, then remove the paper towel, and plant in soil.

My little cutting is coming along, having grown a small leaf, and several small 'bumps' in the damp area, which I'm guessing/hoping is one step in producing roots. If this works, it's the simplest method I ever heard of. I would have thought that late spring was the exact wrong time to try something like this.
