Kitchen Update Pictures

last modified: 9 years ago

I had posted earlier in the years regarding updates to my kitchen. I was all over the place with what to do and I so appreciated everyone's ideas. In the end, we replaced the kitchen counter, sink and faucet, painted and bought a new jelly cabinet for the wall across from the table. I had thought of replacing the chairs, but many here talked me out of it! They are so very sturdy that they will stay for a while. Luckily, we had extra tile for the backsplash and my husband took out the decorative tiles and replaced them. We thought we would see how that looked before tearing down the backsplash. We do like it and it will stay for a while. We are keeping the appliances for right now. As they are 18 years old, we will begin researching new ones, as something is bound to go in the next few years. We will probably replace the floor as well at some point, but for right now we are very happy with the result. Our efforts gave the kitchen a much-needed lift -- and it does not look like lipstick on a pig.

After: It is so hard to get good pictures of this area, but I hope you get an idea. I wanted to come back and post the results and once again thank all who helped us make decisions.

Very nice job! You must be tickled pink.

Please tell me how big a deal it was to replace the tiles. I have quite a few places where d like to get rid of "accent tiles".

I really like the counters and BS. The new cabinet is a nice addition, too.

I like that you were able to remove the accents but retain the existing tile.

Thank you all for your kind comments. I am so glad we didn't tear out the BS. I was willing to do it, but wanted to see how it looked before I did. You can see where the BS meets the granite, there is a gap as the granite is thinner than the laminate. I had no idea what that was going to look like, but I grouted it and it looks like part of the design.

Nosoccermom - my husband did the tiles. There are Youtube videos, but basically he dug out the grout on the sides. That is important to relieve pressure on adjacent tiles. Then he drilled holes in the tiles and just started chipping out the tiles. Luckily, he who saves everything, had tile from when it was originally installed. It was a long job for him. It took several days and created a lot of dust, but I am glad we did it. Also, our grout line was barely visible, so he just used a white grout and I stained it with some tea. It blends perfectly.

Here is a shot which incorporates the cabinet and dinette area. I had another cabinet there, but it was too deep. I wanted a very shallow cabinet with storage. After an exhausting search and not finding the antique I wanted, I found this at an unfinished furniture store about 60 miles from us. It is Parawood, which I had never heard of before. I had seen some of it stained darker and didn't like it as because the wood pieces are so small, it looked very blotchy to me. So I made my own stain starting with a Pickled Oak, adding pine and black. I am really happy with the end result. The walls are looking green in this picture, but they are not. It is a beautiful color that turns blue, beige, gray, green depending on the light.

Looks beautiful, and what a success to just replace the accent tiles. I have way more accent tiles, so it sounds it would be a very long project.

Great update and great color coordination. That was a tough part to find something that tied old and new together and yours is a resounding success!

The changes look very nice. I'm glad you didn't change the chairs. Great news about replacing the accent tiles instead of tearing everything out! I also like your new jelly cabinet. :)

It looks so much better now. I really like the pattern of the granite and the back splash and your appliances, even though you say they're older, look perfectly at home with the new additions. The cabinet is so nice, love the color.
