Do crane flies affect Irish moss like they do lawn?

I'm trying to grow an area of Irish moss "lawn." Recently I've started to see some small patches that look like they are dying. We had a bad infestation of crane flies in our lawn on the other side of the house the last few years. It was treated last year and looks fine this year. These small patches of yellowed or browning Irish moss look somewhat similar before the crane fly infestation in the lawn got so bad and patches got huge. So do crane fly larvae affect Irish moss? Anything else you can think of that might cause such a problem? I know there is something under there because the raccoons dig up the patch looking for something, but don't know if whatever they are finding is harmful to the plants.
