Could the dining sideboard go to the right of the t v? Just the way you have it set up with the lamps and four pictures?

If so, I would move the dining room table to that side of the room; call in an electrician to wire the chandelier in the over the table and replace with a pot light you could aim at the wall and the art work. On that smaller wall, to the left of the doorway, you could put a small server of some kind.

JudyGDesigns--thank you for your input! After looking at the pics of the chairs and pillow you sent (which I love) , the attachments suddenly are not appearing. Any way you can send them again?

I just made a mockup of the curtain with the family and IMO I think it kind of clashes with the rug

@JudyG Designs: I have moved the furniture as you recommended. The sideboard seems a bit big for the wall it's on? What do you think?

Claire--I see what you are saying about the curtains and the rug. The only saving grace may be that the curtains aren't as close to the rug as the mock-up portrays. However, do you have another suggestion? Thanks!

Yes, the sideboard is too big for that space. Put it back where it was and keep the four framed pieces above like you had it. I agree with everything else JudyG said, though I think Claire may be right about the curtains. They don't so much clash as compete with the rug. Plain panels would probably work better.

Plain linen curtains close to the color of the wall, or in the ivory color of the rug.

@groveraxle: thank you for confirming what I thought to be true. I will rearrange the furniture back to the way it was. Do you have any suggestions for end tables, table lamps, fan replacement and possibly a floor lamp? Lighting is really a problem in this room. Thank you!

If you want printed curtains it should be that is not competing with the rug such as this one it lite in print and doesn't compete or something solid

In the dining room, I'd lower the chandelier, lower the art a tad, and put a complementary piece of art on the other side of the door.

What don't you like about the fan? Is it the light kit or the fan itself? Do you want to replace it with a chandelier or another fan?

I don't care for the color of the fan (looks like spray painted silver) or the light kit (dated).

The light over the dining room table is 36" above the lowest point of the light. What is the correct height it should be?

I will lower the art and look for a complimentary piece for the other wall.

I notice you have some raspberry in your pillows and on the tray. That would be a good accent color here with your green.

I don't mind the curtains from Pier 1, but with the rug and pillows [many of us enjoy buying and rotating]... a solid curtain could be nice.

@everdebz: we're pretty casual people, so I'm thinking the faux silk might be a bit too formal for us. I think some sort of linen fabric might suit us and the room a little better. None of the current pillows are silk.

I am wondering about side tables and lamps, though :)

Unless you have outlets in the floor, table lamps will be problematic. I think the best you'll do is a floor lamp in the corner.

Yep, that's a problem alright. How about a lamp next to the plant you photoshopped in beside the fireplace? There is an outlet there.

in the dining room what is the chair sitting in the corner? Is for bad kids?

Any thought to repeat white of painted mantel -- could be a brightener. Is this open to a kitchen btw?

@dyliane: no, the chair isn't for bad kids :) I just don't have another place to put it other than the garage!

@groveraxle: I have these two botanicals that have a cranberry mat. They measure 16.5"h x 11.5"w each. Would they be big enough (side by side) for that wall that measures 67" across from the tip of the mantle to the moulding around the window?

Some floor lamps that are a bit different. Do you by any chance have a crawl space under the floor? I always have (or a basement) and have had floor outlets installed.

My husband is looking into the possibility of having an electrician put in a couple of floor plugs by the couch, as there is access via the crawl space. I have been looking for drapes online and plan on heading out tomorrow to look in person. Thanks again for your help!

I'm so excited that you are looking into the floor outlets. I love them. If they can install even one it will handle your lighting problems. You can run cords under your couch if you need to!

I Do Not Like the Rug; it looks dated like the fan.....find something better.

Neutral carpet will not compete with anything you add to the room...get a 9 x 12 size to hold all the furniture.....
PS have you considered turning the dining table 45 degrees, putting two side chairs on the long side and two different end chairs to add some more 'size' to it? It look too small for the dining room....off topic, but curious.

I had to guess at the size, but if this is close, they're a tad too small.

@Susan Davis: thank you for your suggestions. I am not opposed to getting a new rug. Can you suggest a couple that might go in the room? As far as turning the table 45 degrees, I am not able as it would block the entry into the kitchen. I am looking to replace the end chairs, though.

@Groveraxle: thanks for Photoshopping in the two botanicals--yes, I think they are too small. I might do what JudyG Designs suggested and move the four botanical prints above the sideboard to that wall and look for a mirror for above the sideboard.

I found some curtains today and am in the process of getting them hung. Photos to follow.

Also, what do you think about sconces on either side of the art behind the sofa? Might be another way of adding a little light.

Sconces usually produce very unflattering light, and sconces on a blank wall forever constrain what can go on that wall. If there's room, I'd sooner see a narrow console with lamps.

When choosing colors for your room and accessories, pick items/fabrics/paint/art which match one or more of the colors in your rug.

@groveraxle: yes, there is room for a console table behind the couch where you have depicted it as well as on the window wall. Great idea! Due to the plug/cord situation, it would probably be better behind the couch in front of the window.

I really like the idea of a console under the art w/ a lamp. It will help ground that art, too. With a floor lamp to the side of your fireplace that will warm things up in the evening for sure!!!!
