Lime tree watering ring

I have a large, mature lime tree that is a great producer. The previous resident built a ring around the base (about 5' in diameter) with large rocks (12-15") and filled it will smaller rocks (3-5"). The rock ring is ugly and I'd like to remove it and let the grass fill in and grow up to the trunk...is this ok to do or does a mature lime tree need a watering ring, and if so, is the best type? The tree doesn't have drip irrigation just the lawn sprinkler. Thanks!
