It appears you have all couches? The smaller couch should be relocated if possible as it's nice and you might choose to slipper chairs which are smaller in scale on each side of the fireplace... however, you have far too much furniture in this room as on the right by the plant a large wooden piece and and the other exercise piece?

I can't tell as some photos are righted and some are sideways. The art above the fireplace is way too large and eating up that area and closing down the room as it's too high (hence the size). I think the first thing you may ask is, "what can I eliminate from this room to make it look cohesive and balance, less cluttered and go from there with furnishings and balance.

You have a lot of furniture going on in there Ramona.

Which seating don't you use? I'd get rid of the armchair in front of the cross trainer as well as the settee if possible.

And the coffee table and sideboard are stylistically very at odds with the c-table and lowboard to the right of the settee.

So I think you need to resolve that first and out of the style you stick with I'd have some suggestions of armchairs to frame the fireplace.

What I'm seeing in the room is a lot. You seem to have a large sectional with a large coffee table. The love seat and 1 chair, an excersize bike, a plant, a built-in bookcase, a flat screen tv and stand, and possibly a buffet? How much actual seating do you need? Personally I don't think you need to replace just down size and rearrange. I would take the hanging behind the sectional down and put the large picture above the fireplace in its place. Then I would have the flat screen installed above the fireplace. You have that built-in bookcase that your components can go in. Remove the excersize equipment that will open the area and you can put your chair in a comfortable place next to fireplace. Then I would put the love seat on the wall where the tv was with the hanging that had been above the sectional. This arrangement should open the room up and feel a little lighter and more funtional. Also adding a room size (8x10 or 9x12) rug will help bring all the pieces together. I would definately not have it busy with color. Keep it neutral....looks like possibly your sectional is gray so I would do light gray with ivory or cream color.

Now if you are want to buy all new I would still put tv above fireplace. I would paint out the bookcase probably white. Add an area rug as well then would have a nice sofa to place centered in front of the fireplace/tv area (don't always have to have furniture against walls) and then 2 chairs flanking the fireplace. Have a larger foot stool in front of sofa in place of the large coffee table as that also can be used for additional seating if needed.

I hope this helps even a little with your room redo. Will be watching for the "after" pictures!

Wow, there is a lot of seating in that room.... Maybe opt for a tufted bench (like: https://www.houzz.com/products/eliza-bench-bed-twin-opal-gray-prvw-vr~42577706 ) which give you seating as well as a view of the fireplace (from both sides).

Thanks for all the helpful ideas. I don't think I'm ready for a total overhaul @dory50ish but your ideas are fabulous.... , I'm going to try and incorporate some of them like getting a rug and painting the bookcase white. I HAVE to get rid of stuff and am planning to move the love seat into another room, move out the exercise bike and the stools. I really like the chaise @Carla but i wish it had some back rest. What do you think of this? https://www.houzz.com/products/abbyson-living-charlotte-tufted-velvet-chaise-lounge-ivory-prvw-vr~80708955

I don't like the legs but can maybe spray paint it?

or any of these? http://www.horchow.com/Melina-Chaise/cprod112810018/p.prod

Thanks so much!!!!!!

Sorry -- turned into a busy week at work....

Funny story: I have one very similar to the Charlotte (with the ugly legs), and I've warned the family that it's "mine" -- ha,ha,ha. Apparently the furry family members don't care, and even more surprising, I came home unexpectedly one day to drop off some plants from a coworker and came in from the backyard to wash my hands -- when I found Penny the cat and Jake the dog (who don't "get along" when the family is around) napping on my chaise!

Note: I got it on a VERY good deal and have since recovered it (but don't seem to have a good picture of it). It has legs more like: https://www.houzz.com/products/bibiano-chaise-velvet-blue-prvw-vr~71357708

You have too many couches. In a space that small, you get only one. Remove the rest of the furniture and get two matching accent chairs.

@CarlaH what a lovely spot to have a chaise! I would be laying there all day too. Cute pic.

@cpaul1 yes I do have too much furniture however we use all of it and since it's a multi purpose room = family and entertaining we need it to be loungy as well... dilemma is to have it be comfy with enough seating and still not look cramped. Having said that there's a lot of unnecessary stuff in there I have to get rid of!
Thanks for your suggestion.

I do like the Nail Head Trimmed chaise. It seems to be the better choice to go with your style of sectional.

Hi Ramona. Adding another chaise with a back isn't going to solve the problem of blocking your fireplace. Once you eliminate the exercise equipment and the stools, pull the other chair up on an angle next to the fireplace and find another chair for the other side. You're only losing one seat then but it will open up the space so much more. Another possibility may be to move your t.v. and angle the console by the book case. You might then have room to bring the settee around and form a U shape with your furniture. The smaller chair could then go to the right of the fireplace. You may need a smaller coffee table to do this though.
