I am not a fan of a runner there. I would do a larger PATTERNED rug (HIDES MORE ILLS) that suits the space more. Coordinate with fabric for a cushion. Move the art to the right side in an asymmetrical arrangement and move the pots/vases to the other side with one being roughly the height of the art and where it is hung. Not too high of course. If this is a "mud" room type place a shelf for hats or something might be better. What is the goal?

Both. Can you keep both and switch when the mood suits you? If not I like the pattern slightly better, but only because the solid will be very difficult to keep lint free.

Flo: thank you! it's been hard to find a rug that is the right dimension for that space. Also, we have a 5 year old so the floor becomes precious train-making space (!). so, maybe later in life we can get a custom sized rug. RE: the art, move it towards the sconce? Leaving how much room? And move all the vases and plants over?

Yes, this is a mud-room / toy storage (thanks to Kallax, etc.). shoes below the bench, toys on either side. I bought foam to make a cushion-- planning to use the black sunbrella that is there now.

fyi- these are FLOR tiles…so pretty easy to clean… but right, the black will show more yuck.

That picture might be too long to go the sides and you have the sconces which I didn't see before. So nix that idea. I would remove everything except your vases from the counter tops. Less clutter is better. Do the print for the rug, but you could get the Flor style that are irregular edge and your "creative" one could be told it is a "lake" and he/she has to make a bridge for over the lake! Encourage creativity and they will figure a way!

I would consider a larger rug which pulls colors from the art work and or vases!

hi! can you all suggest a rug that has a more fine print (so as not to compete too much with the painting) and that has black, white, and copper/rust? (the color of the vases…)

A small rug like that feels like it's a spot to place your shoes and doesn't define the space either by its color or size. I would work with your art and vase colors to pull that area together. Would suggest removing the black place mats and small accessories and lower your art. The rug below from Wayfair would be lovely and define the space and make it interesting and pretty.
