Something is off in the scheme, at least on my monitor. Blue and blue stripe fabric are nice together, but the sofa doesn’t look like the color in the stripe and your walls don’t like either.

But, as to your orange fabric…no because it is too formal a print and orange doesn’t work with the beiges I am seeing.

What if you keep your fabrics in the same tones and repaint the walls?

A little background... I am in the middle of changing my entire color scheme. We are doing it in stages to spread out the cost. The sofa is on it's way out in the second phase, but it just needs to work in the meantime. The stripe and the blue actually look really great with the floor.

I need to work in a bit of orange into the room to tie in the rest of the house. I just changed my dining room to a navy and orange artsy kind of look. I'll attach a pic of that so you can see what I'm talking about. (Although I'm not finished with that room either)

I hear what you're saying about the orange fabric being too formal. I was worried about that myself, but at $14 a yard I couldn't resist.

The sofa is the primary upholstery fabric in the space and other upholstery needs to relate. A white stripe in the blue/white fabric isn't a good choice. The orange fabrics for chair upholstery would be better. Of course, I don't know the style of chairs and the other elements in the room....so, just giving my opinion based on what I see now.

Did you buy the sample in the book, or are you talking about the throw you made?

If you are soon to replace sofa, don’t spend big money now on fabrics to make it work. Inexpensive throw pillows will do until you are ready to buy to the sofa. You may want paint the walls at that time, too.

The white stripe is more of a "dirty white" like the walls. It's hard to tell from the photo. The walls are Benjamin Moore sailcloth and the built in is Benjamin Moore Old Navy. I know it looks black in the photo. It's actually really pretty in person. The floors and walls are brand new.

I do like that pillow Judy. I hadn't really thought about using a floral.

I hear you about not spending too much on pillows. They won't cost me much because I'm sewing them myself and looking for decent priced fabrics. (That's why I couldn't pass up the fabric that I made the throw out of. I'm a sucker for a pretty remnant) and Ill be able to reuse the pillow forms with new fabric in the future.

My two cents on color. I don't like introducing a random color that doesn't make any sense. So in this case, the orange to me doesn't make any sense. I'm not a fan of picking a color for the sake of picking a color. I don't understand why your curtains in the dining room are orange, and now I don't understand why that decision is making you make another bad decision and add orange to yet another room where it doesn't belong. Decorating does not mean adding "pops of color", it actually means the opposite. It means working within the palette that fits in the space relative to what else is in the space.

Tell me about it! I can't believe God has the gaul to throw an orange sunset in the middle of an obviously blue and white themed beach... tacky! Or an orange flower on a yellow and green variegated hibiscus!!! Don't get me started!

I like your navy and coral color scheme, it seems very deliberate to me, more than just a "pop" of color. I also like the coral print fabric and do not think it's too formal, as well as the navy velvet. The pillow that JudyG posted is nice too. The woven fabric would look good with a frame of navy blue ribbon. Just don't go overboard with the pillows. Consider just doing knife edge or a very small flange edge instead of a lot of trims. In my area, most of the designers are going that route unless it's an older (historical)/traditional home.

Brandy, my advice is to wait until you choose your new sofa before you recover the chairs in the blue. By recovering your chairs first you are limiting your choice of a sofa. And if you love orange use it. I like the pillow cover suggested above; the inclusion of other colors in addition to the orange and blue is interesting and softens the blue/orange combination.

So, here's what I ended up with. Oh course I haven't sewn anything yet, so you have to use your imagination a bit. I plan to do 3 floral, 3 blue, and one geometric pillow for the sofa.

Love your design aesthetic too. If you are loving the orange and want to bring ti to the family room in bits and pieces a few items that are orange in the hutch might work? Picture frames, boxes, vessels......and for a different look the flora pillows on the striped chair exchange. Just random thoughts, the room needs no improvement but just musing; you know when you get the itch to switch....lol.

Thank you Susan! I've had such fun changing up my house. I painted the chairs, but I had someone else recover them. I wish I knew how to do upholstery, but these were too complicated to learn on for the first time. Thanks for the suggestion about putting something orange in the bookshelves. I'm constantly on the prowl for something I love.
