Hi everyone - Brilliant colour Stan.

I have a live oak tree with a three-way branching trunk. It should have been properly pruned for a central leader years ago by the former homeowner, but that horse is out of the barn, LOL. Even this is an old photo from 2013.

I'm afraid to nestle a broms or epis in there... will it encourage rot in the crevice?

I don't know for sure...but broms only need a minimum of moss around the roots..so they might not create a perpetual soaking tree branch. Oaks seem very good epiphyte hosts.

Hi everyone - When I mount bromeliads in a tree I never put potting mix, moss or any other growing medium between their roots and the tree bark as I find the bromeliad roots will preferentially grow into these mediums instead of onto the bark where they are needed to attach. Furthermore, this eliminates the risk of growing medium causing a build-up of moisture which could cause some sort of rot.

The main thing to remember when mounting orchids or bromeliads to a tree or any other host, is to attach them firmly because if they are able to move, the new roots will continually be broken off and prevent the plant attaching.
