They should keep growing until about August so you've still got a way to go!

The plants will stop growing and the tops will completely yellow and dry up. I'm no expert but once most of the plant is yellow you can start digging them up and give them time to dry for storage.

There are a lot of garlic lovers on the Allium thread.

First off, you mentioned planting a year ago, so I'm assuming last spring. Far too early - you plant in the fall or even winter if you can work the ground. The extra time in the ground really does nothing except make you wait longer :-). Any time now, your garlic should be producing scapes (flowers). Cut off before they become too woody and enjoy in stir fry or make garlic scape pesto. A good rule of thumb to harvest garlic is when half to two thirds of the leaves have browned, for me usually end of July or thereabouts. If you wait much longer than that, you risk the chance of the bulbs splitting. Then yes, hang to cure (stocks intact) for a few weeks. Make sure to set aside some cloves for next season's crop!

You are welcome! Yes, I've just been noticing my scapes just recently too - sometimes it's hard to tell because it often looks like another leaf, but it's more slender and does the whole pig-tail curl thing. Delicious - this will definitely be a garlic scape pesto year for me.

I've been mastering growing garlic in containers over the past few years, so I am getting pretty good at it. What I've been working on is having another short-term crop (or annual flower) that I can grow in between harvest (end of July) and next planting (end of October or November). I'm still working on that one. I did plant some annual seeds in between the garlic, so I'm seeing how that will work - they really haven't started to come up yet.

Mmm scape pesto sounds delicious!! I am so excited to try home grown garlic lol!! How big of containers do you use for how many bulbs? I would love to try them in containers do you get very cold winters and if so do they do OK in containers as opposed to in the ground? I have mine in the ground but grew corn next to them last year and strawberry's are doing well next to them this year also have some calundula and Marigold near them from seed and 2 nursery plants the seeds have not bloomed yet but are growing very well near them and the nurture caludula is doing wonderful next to them
