There are a few bugs that have a similar appearance. That one however, looks like an immature assassin bug. If so, it's a good guy in the garden.

Another similar beneficial is the wheel bug; while a look-a-like garden pest is the leaf footed bug.

The thorax of the one you posted appears to me to be most like one of the assassin or wheel bugs. The legs give it the appearance of one of the nymph stages.

I'd keep it around and see if you can find other similar ones so you can compare the differences.

Thanks, rgreen. My wife thought assassin bug, too, but when she looked at the pictures she said, "meh, maybe not." I didn't look at the earlier life stages though. Thank you. I'll leave him be.

Well, after getting curious, I also found a few images of leaf footed bug nymphs that resemble your pic. In short... it could be either one of the leaf footed, or one of the many types of assassin bug nymphs. Keep an eye out for more. The adults are much easier to identify with greater certainty. If you see the leaf footed adults, they are the pests. They look a lot like adult squash bugs.

Oh, and as I'm sure you've read, assassin and wheel bugs have a nasty bite. They don't look to hurt humans at all, but although they are beneficial garden insects, they are not necessarily friendly to being handled.
