Help finding right Oakleaf

Hi all! I have a perfect spot for an Oakleaf in my back yard. I'm in Arlington Texas zone 8a. The space is approx. 7 feet by 5 feet. Love the snowflake but maybe too big? Looked at the PeeWee but each site I go to seems to give contradicting information on size. Also where is the best place to purchase in the DFW area? Appreciate any advise anyone can give.

Alice, Snow Queen and Snowflake will probably exceed 5' wide at some point. Part of the reason is it is in their DNA and because our growing season in Tx is so long. Also, some of those size estimates are for size at about 10 years but you know, the plant simply does not quit growing at 10 years sooooo.... if you select one of those, you would have to control the width by pruning at the end of June.

I have a PeeWee, which is more compact, and would fit the bill just fine. Munchkin and Ruby Slippers are also compact and seem to grow more lower than PW. If you like RS, select a spot that has "some" winter protection as my Ruby Slippers has had issues with flower buds getting zapped when our winters are mild and temps go below freezing a lot (25 or less) and for extended periods of time. The leaves do not get zapped even a few degrees below 32 but the buds appear to be somewhat sensitive. My RS has gone deciduous in December but PW has stayed evergeen the last 2-3 years.

I have purchased all of mine locally. Redenta's in Arlington is where I usually find a supply of oakleaf hydrangeas almost every year but, the ones that they carry can vary every year. I bought PW at Marshall Grain in Grapevine but they do not carry oakleafs every season; I think I saw panulatas and mopheads/lacecaps this year... I think... ;o) Calloway's has a large supply of mopheads this year and but I do not remember seeing an oakleaf hydrangea there recently. Many local nurseries that carry oakleafs tend to choose Alice, which is quite large.

Ah, Luis, I was hoping that you would respond as I believe you are in the Metroplex. I have a Rendenta's quite close and will check there. Thanks for replying. I will look for the Per Wee. Some sites say 3 feet tall and wide and some say 6 feet so I was confused. Hope to find one that eventually get 4 to 5. Thanks again.

That is where I got my Snow Queen and a few other plants! Off Green Oaks, no?

I cannot remember how old these guys are now but here are some recent stats... PW and RS are more wide than tall; PW is about 3.5' wide and 3' tall while RS has hardly grown and is even smaller than PW, about 1.5' wide by 1' tall. Snow Queen is more tall than wide; almost 4' tall and almost 3' wide.

So far, I have an Amethyst oakleaf that hasn't exceeded that size, and it's leaves aren't that large (hand size), which is a good tell-tale sign of semi/compact oakleaf growth habits. It is a very tidy plant, and is unbranded so it's sold randomly in big box stores and nurseries alike.

Also check out a few of the Gatsby's series oakleafs from Proven Winners - one or more of those might meet your requirements, and Moon has mophead flowers!
