Vladimir- I bought them at Menards for a $1 a piece! They went up to 14 in as well. I am going back there to buy bigger ones when I need them. I think they were adding a dollar as the pots got bigger, but still very affordable and they have nice, large drain holes in the bottom!

Those look wonderful! Great job! I can't wait to see how they grow this summer. Your garden looks great too! I am growing everything in pots this year since we don't have a good in ground space. How did you clear the grass out for the patch? by hand? I want to take up the grass on a slope in the back of my house but dreading getting the grass up. I did a 4x4 patch last year with a square shovel and hated every minute of it, I can't imagine trying to do as large of a space that I want.

Sammers- I think it was 5 years ago I cleared the grass. I scraped it off with a shovel. It took a whole day and I dumped the grass back in some trees. Then I hand tilled the thing for years, adding in admenments until the soil was right. This year my father in law bought me an electric tiller and it was sooooo much easier! It still took awhile to transfer my tomatoes and peppers from their solo cups. I'm only 28, I feel bad not hand tilling it but the electric tiller was so much easier!

Don't feel bad at all for using an electric tiller, I am a firm supporter of work smarter not harder when it comes to gardening. It takes so much energy out of you no matter what you might as well take any convenience you can get. I feel so silly not having the strength and energy to do a lot of the heavy hitting things in the garden, I just turned 28 as well last week and I feel like it should still be young enough to scoff at back pains but it never fails, I get out and pull the weeds, or dig some planting holes and in a few hours I feel like I can't move lol.

I just did my huge calamondin and he had some dead roots on the bottom of him but a bunch of new roots as well. I ran out of 511 and just ordered more so my lemon will have to wait a couple of days. My poor calamondin. That's probably why he didn't bloom this year. :-(

Amanda, don't laugh, but I was going to look at the website where you bought your little trees and then low and behold, I received one from them to in the mail from my order back in January that I forgot about...lol I never would of thought I did that but great minds think a like. Yeah! The pots were glued or something to the cardboard protector box! I think I cut mine out bc it was insanely secured in there! I had to put the sticker from the plastic on the pots bc otherwise I would've mixed them all up haha! Mine are doing great in their new pots, no dropped leaves and the new growth looks bigger. They are growing fast already! The same thing happened to me Mike, I ordered two tangerines not one and it surprised me when I got the shipping confirmation! You just have to wait so long to get them, you forget what you ordered! Hahaha!

To clear a patch, I would just take the lawnmower and cut the grass as short as possible. Then you can roundup it, or till it under. I would never try to dig it out with a shovel lol.

Amanda, exactly!@ Lol I still have stuff coming to me from being ordered lat winter after I just ordered the same plants within the month...No wonder I am so broke..hahah

Mike- Everything I received sprouted right to life, except my hibiscus. I'm giving it a few more days before I email them that it's a dud. Hopefully all your plants sprout to life! I usually have good luck buying o line.

Jaydub83- I dug it out bc my soil is heavy with clay and I knew I would have to add amendments. Just making room :-) that's why I have all my blueberries in a raised bed, I have crappy soil haha.

Jay, I wish I could, my neighbor used the mow down and till method and now she just has grass constantly growing in her beds, every-time she rips out a clump it pops back up and disturbs her plants in the process. We can't use roundup because our house is next to a small wetland area, and glyphosate the active ingredient in roundup has been shown to be really detrimental to aquatic life, especially frogs. My boyfriend really doesn't want to be responsible for a local frog genocide and I can't blame him. Its just unfortunate because that would be the easiest method.

Amanda, I switched away from FP, it worked okay in the beginning, but eventually did nothing. Laura has amazing results with it though (as is obvious by her outstanding trees we all strive for)... I am actually giving my trees a mix of acid fertilizer and citrus fertilizer (both made by Peters), and I have started to really see improvement in my growth. I'm not a chemist so I'm unsure why FP has been lackluster for me, but I surmise it has something to do with increasing the soil pH toward alkaline levels (if anyone knows please chime in)...

Stefan- I have been wanting to try Jacks but I am so hestitant to buy that huge bag. Foilage pro has been working great for me. I also use fish emulsion in the summer. All my plants love that stuff haha. I'll probably break down and get some Jacks later this summer. I was more questioning whether I could feed them more than once a week during the summer to help them put on size. I just want them as big as possible so that winter will not hit them so hard.

I just got my new bag of reptibark but it's storming right now. I can't wait to repot my bigger Meyer lemon!

I don't purchase the large bag either, since I import to Canada from the USA. I get the smaller containers off amazon. The Citrus Feed is a 1.5LB container and the acid special is 4LB container. The main benefit is this is not liquid... the liquid stuff I tend to spill as much as I use.

I feed every time I water, and I don't really measure since it comes with a scooper. I use one scoop per gallon of water.

No problem! Here is my calamondin, it is growing like a weed.

Wow it looks great! This is my calamondin. After his repot he exploded with growth and is getting darker green. He had a bad manganese deficiency this winter :-( roots were too cold and it was in bad mix. He already looks better, hopefully the Jacks will help him grow and get back to his dark green!

Amanda, it is greening up nicely! You're doing a very good job! Good luck mixing up the new soil and getting your trees repotted! Post a photo once you've done it.

Steve, I have no complaints with my kumquat... It's a slow grower, but is spreading out nicely! It has even put out some flowers and little fruits. Not sure yet if I'll keep them or remove them. Amanda don't mean to highjack your thread! I have a Nagami, but it is too young to comment on its growth.

This is my fukushu kumquat (it is grafted to C-35).

Stefan- I love seeing and hearing about other people's citrus trees! Feel free to always post anything! Always tell me if I'm doing something wrong. Most of the stuff I post is to see what others say bc I am still relatively new to growing citrus. I've gardened all my life but all of this has been a learning experience!

Just finished putting the big Meyer into 511. The gold nugget dropped its little fruit and my Meyer dropped its biggest lemon. I am super bummed but I knew it was likely to happen.

I love this gold nugget and I hope it starts to get a little greener soon! I left it staked bc it gets really windy where I live.

I really love this mix. It smells great and looks great. Hopefully I can grow some great trees in it! My end goal is fruit but I also want them to be as healthy as possible. I love my indoor garden in the winter.

I am sorry they dropped their fruit Amanda, my Meyer has two bloom flushes last year one in spring and one in late summer maybe your's will too. Regardless I am sure they are going to be really happy in the new mix and love those purple pots!

The Meyer has other lemons on it so there is still hope for a fruit. The one that fell off was the first and biggest lemon. Such a bummer. I was hoping to make some lemon bars with it haha!

That is a beautiful tree. I am glad to see that a kumquat tree from seed can do so well in a pot. I forgot to ask What kind of kumquat is it. I looked back to see your comment on feeding them. That has been my practice for the last 2 years and it has worked well. This is the first year to add 4 hours of CFL 6300K light after a full day outside in sunlight with great success.

Persimmonbob- thanks! I am excited to add the jacks to the schedule. I have used foilage pro and fish emulsion exclusively for a long time. Hopefully the jacks will help them grow faster. I can only feed them once a week, right? Anymore than that and I risk fertilizer burn?

My calamondin is forming flower buds for the FIRST TIME EVER!!!!!! This is a big deal for me, I've been waiting a long time for this! Yay!

Also my son hit a home run this morning, so this might be the best day ever. Too much happiness in one day!

Amanda, i would start with once every two weeks. What is the P/H of your water? 6 or 6.5 is good, i would stay in that range. Rainwater is usely 5.5 or 6.

My well water is as high as 7.5, not good! The important think to remember that micro's ( metals) plant up take is between p/h 5 to 6.5 so rainwater is pretty good.

Steve,i do not know what kind it is. The nursery that i go to has the tree for many years and i have never ask him, i just pick a handfull when i stop by, it seems to have allways a few ripe ones. He grow this tree in the corner of his greenhouse. It is about 8' wide and that tall.

Amanda,when you grow citrus in small containers the change of drying-out is not good for the tree growth being stop. Between drying-out and fertilizing the tree does't know what to do. Once the tree is at its final growth and in appropriate container and fruiting than you get a better feel about fertilizing.

Citrus are heavy feeders especial when they start fruiting heavily.

Thank you for the info. I have been watering the little trees more often because they seem to be drying a lot quicker than the larger trees. I didn't know that they stopped growing when they are too dry, but that makes a lot of sense when I think about it. I am going to feed all the trees on Wednesday!

The small feeder roots dry-out first, a lot of them are concentrated on top, if they die the plant need time to replace them.
