My Miele did not smell when new at all. I have a strong sense of smell to much annoyance. Do you have a Miele showroom or Design center near by where they have the Miele dishwashers hooked up? If so, I would take some dishes and go give them a spin to see if you smell anything. My model does not have a vent but it opens the dishwasher to vent hot air at the end of the cycle. What dish washing detergent are you using? Could that be the culprit too?

Thanks for your response! Its definitely not the dishwasher detergent. We've used the same one fora long time and never had a problem with the previous dishwasher... we use Finish. Its definitely the dishwasher. My mom also has a Miele and says she never had that problem either except the rep at the store says all of the dishwashers nowadays are made with nylon racks and bitumen causing some odor. I am totally open to trying a miele but it seems rather expensive with all the added on fees that come with miele installation... whats the best Miele dishwasher for someone who doesn't want to spend more then $1500 on a dishwasher? thank you!

The base model seemed to be the G4925 which was $899 when I was shopping for a DW back in March. It was/is being discounted because Miele was coming out with new models. The model line up was called the Dimension. Miele's new line is called "Eco Flex." They were released in April. In your sub-$1500 price range, there are a variety of models and options (like panel ready doors, hidden controls, etc.) which you can find here. You might find this current GW thread helpful as a place to start figuring out what features you need/want. FWIW, I do recall the Miele racks having the same "new DW" aroma when I was in the showroom as the Bosch I wound up buying.

Dishwashers have had nylon racks and bitumen soundproofing for years now. My DWs (both ASKOs) had/have them, too, and I never detected a smell that I could tie to those materials. However, most new manufactured items have a smell, especially the ones with some plastic and release compounds that off-gas for a while.

It may be that Miele uses different materials so that the smell is less noticeable; you can only go to a store that sells Miele and whiff a new DW (that is, not one that's been on the sales floor for a few months) to see if it's OK for you. However, as you said, that's an expensive fix and one I would not pursue without a smell test.

You could try propping open the DW door between washes (if you don't do that already). That won't stop the off-gassing but it should get the level to less-noticeable levels sooner. You also could try pulling the DW out of its cavity to see if there's something behind it causing the problem. Just to cover your bases.

Its not soundproofing material makomg the smell. Its the exhaust vent. My LG does the same. It smells like pvc towards the end of the cycle. I found it come dirctly out of the vent tube that vents the humidity. Anyone have a solution to this? Or another male and model that has no PVC parts and/or smell?

Did you find a solution? I have heard some tolerate Asko and that Miele encapsulates their bitumen, but I would like to know, as I'm sensitive and need a new dishwasher. I do agree that it seems all the manufacturers have jumped on the bitumen bandwagon in the last several years.

I'm having the same problem with the overpowering plastic stench in my new Bosch dishwasher. It smalls so bad that I'm worried about using anything that has been washed in it. I came across this review as I was trying to find how to get rid of the smell.

I am having the same problem. I've had my Bosch for a couple of weeks and keep hoping the smell stops. It makes me sick smelling it. I have to wave my dishes around after a cycle to get the smell out.

I am also having this problem with my new Bosch. The plastic smell is so bad that the water we drink from the clean cups tastes like plastic. So toxic! I'm returning it and exchanging it for a Miele.

Mine finally went away. I don't know if it was a coincidence, but it happened when I got a new detergent. I always buy store brand and for some reason I decided to splurge and got some Cascade Platinum. The first time I used it the smell was gone. I don't see how it cloud have had anything to do with the detergent, though. But it was suddenly gone.

I've had my Bosch DW for 4 weeks. The first few days I had a rubber smell that I figured was from the gasket. After about a week it went away. Never had any taste or smell from my dishes that I could tell. I use Finish Quantum, just like I used in my Maytag.

We've had our Bosch for about 6 weeks and it still smells horrible ... I put the dishes in as quickly as possible. My husband thinks the dishes smell after I've run it but I can't smell anything on the dishes. I tried running a load with white vinegar in a bowl and it helped a little. We use Cascade Platinum and have been using Cascade for years in other dishwashers.

My brand new Frigidaire stinks to high heaven, and the dishes have to be rewashed to remove the nasty chemical smell. The smell is nauseating. I load the dw as quickly as possible because every moment the door is open it fill the house with chemical stench.

Cascade Complete Powder detergent works great. Nothing smells. Fill both dispensers up to the line.

We have the same problem. A brand new Miele dishwasher, installed Jan 2024. It replaced our old Miele dishwasher that we had from ~2009. We cannot believe how bad the 'chemical materials' smell from the new Miele. It's been a week, and it is non-stop nauseating. We have all four of us in the house have headaches and I have intestinal pains. I've run it two dozen times, with sani hot cycle, and with detergent, and I finally then also did the cup of vinegar in a bowl in the bottom rack as others had suggested. Our beautiful home has turned into a place where we feel we are constantly being poisoned by the smell, it is so strong. It doens't seem like it's something in a finish, it seems more like coming from the actual materials used to make the machine somehow, like maybe they have some plastic or metal components contributing to the smell. Just really terrible off-gassing kind of smell, but really strong.

We've been keeping the door open entirely after running it to try and help it dry well and air out, and then keeping the door unlatched so the smell isn't 'sealed up inside', but it's hardly improving.

I'm so frustrated with these chemical engineers who don't have a better understanding of the effects on human or environmental health in the materials they select, and I have lost some trust in Miele as a company over this. I certainly understand that they have a lot of health considerations when choosing materials to use (and then monitor the qualities of throughout sourcing and manufacture), such as bacterial resistance, operations under different water conditions, etc., but there is something very off about these chemical smells here, and I would not consider them fit for washing our dishes or being in our home.

I understand from reading others' comments that this is common with newer dishwashers now, but if anyone has any experience with companies that don't have terrible off-gassing from new materials, like the kind of off-gassing that you know will never really go away that is, then I would really like to hear.
