With the pitch of your roof, solid black shingles would be overpowering IMO. I think charcoal would look nice with your siding and shutters.....will those stay?

Shutters are staying and we are in the process of arguing with insurance about the siding. (We had storm damage). They've approved siding the front and back, but not the sides! I'm afraid it'll never match, so we are hoping to get approval to side everything. If we get approval....then I'll need to pick a house color too! LOL!

We have a lot of customers starting to use Certainteed's Presidential Shake shingles for that more "dimensional" look like you were talking about -- and as a contractor we love them for their craftsmanship as well as ease of installation. They have a Charcoal Black or a Shadow Gray, both of which might look great. PS - gorgeous house!

Personally...I'm kind of partial to darker roofs, especially with the pops of white you have in the trim (and a cheerful door would finish it all off). But sometimes colors in photos don't totally do it justice. If you were looking for those types of shingles, I'd suggest calling a few contractors in your area (if you don't have one in mind to work with, ask your insurance agent for suggestions) to see if they have any sample boards and take a look at Charcoal Black (probably what I'd go with, personally), Shadow Gray, and Weathered Wood. If you get the green light to do siding, you can either color-match what you already have, or even go a touch lighter so there's a little more contrast in the siding, roof, and shutters.

The pictures of the house we did last summer are both the same roof -- just the camera exposure (time of day, lighting, etc.) makes it look like different colors, so that's why getting some samples (or asking your contractor for a few addresses of homes they did with those color shingles so you can drive by and take a look in person -- we provide those for folks, as do lots of other contractors) can be an important step in nailing down the right color!

I like the dark colored roofs too! Thank you for the color suggestions, I will ask our contractor for samples. If we don't get the greenlight for siding, we may just pay out-of-pocket.

White Castle Roofing - who is the manufacturer of the colors you suggested? The contractor gave me sample boards from Owens Corning Duration and Tamko Heritage Premium. And would you recommend one over the other?

Sorry White Castle Roofing - just saw your earlier post recommending Certainteed's Presidential Shake shingles. I think we are going to use Certainteed Monogram siding on the house. Is there a big difference in price between the Presidential Shake shingles and either the Owens Corning Duration or Tamko Heritage Premium?

They used to be called architectural roofs when they first came out.

The Duration and Heritage Premium are both good shingles. Presidential is more upscale, but I'm not sure on cost. Just check your decking prior to using the Presidential brand. It's a heavy shingle. I'm just saying because I went to see a local home a few years ago with very thin decking and a shingle similar to the Presidential had been used and the decking was bowed in between every rafter. Balls had been dropped by a couple of contractors there, but we don't have snow load to consider down this way.

Sorry, was away from the computer for the weekend (got to visit a niece and nephew, so stepped away from the laptop for that!). You've gotten some great advice here in the meantime. Certainteed's Presidential Shake is definitely a heavier shingle, and is likely going to be more costly than those other two. I think it's just more of the style you had mentioned the other day. Those other two are are architectural (laminate) shingles and look more like the shingles you currently have on your roof, but are definitely great options with some good colors to look at.

Around here we use more of the Owens Corning than the Tamko, but that's more of a regional/contractor thing than anything about the shingles themselves, and you'd probably find just as many great contractors who say the opposite! Since I'm more familiar with Owens Corning, personally, I'd say you might check out their Estate Gray or maybe even Colonial Slate shades, if you haven't already (unless your siding colors will change drastically?). Those would be more of the colors you were looking at last week!

Thank you, White Castle Roofing! Hope you had a great visit with your family this weekend :) Most likely, our siding will be done in either the same color or a shade darker. Do you find the Estate Gray to be blue-ish or the Slate shade green-ish? It's so hard to tell off of the little samples they give! I definitely don't want a color that has blue or green, rather I'm looking for dark gray/black with maybe some variations in tone to add dimension.

I hear you there about the samples being so little to figure it out! Estate Gray does tend to look a little blue-er (more like a cool gray), where we actually find the Colonial Slate to even have a little more of a reddish tint (like a warm gray). You could also take a look at Onyx Black, which is going to be a pretty dark color, but not completely black. You might also ask your contractor if they've done any roofs in those colors and ask for those addresses, so you can just do a drive-by and see what a whole roof looks like.

White Castle Roofing - I picked up another roofing sample over the weekend. Are you familiar with Iko Dual Black?

We are! We don't personally install a ton of Iko roofs, so my familiarity isn't quite as high with that brand as a few others, but there's nothing wrong with them (it's more just distributor preference than anything). That color would be a good one for your roof. It's got some nice dimension to it so it's not all just one shade -- kind of textured-looking, like you mentioned in the OP you were looking for. If you haven't seen any of those roofs in person, it might be worth asking your contractor about, or look up some completed houses online -- they look a little different with the shingles all together than just on a sample board, but with a cool effect that the small board doesn't quite do justice to, if that makes sense. Let us know what you choose!

White Castle Roofing - thank you so much! I asked our contractor about the differences between brands, but he told me it's just personal preference as to which color I like. The Iko seems so much thicker and more square on the sample board....I'm just not sure if it really is that way or if it's just the sample that appears that way. My husband's second choice is Tamko Rustic Black, however I think the Iko may show more dimension without being overly busy.
