Mushy would seem to indicate some sort of rot and that usually occurs when drainage is not good. On the west side of the Cascades, we have had record rainfall levels this winter but still the bulbs performed as they have in years past.......provided they were planted in well drained soils. Has anything changed in your garden?

The only other common cause for bulbs rotting is that they froze. But if planted at the proper depth, that shouldn't be an issue at all. That is more of a risk for unprotected bulbs or those in containers.
