Irrigation in plant beds

We are getting ready to install a sprinkler system and have gotten different advice from landscapers/irrigation experts. We have new beds with trees/shrubs/perennials (no annuals)... do we need to have sprinkler heads installed in them? We have been told that the plants are hearty and should be fine after a year.... just to water if we have a drought situation this summer, but by next summer should be fine. Others have said to install them in the beds. (We live in the midwest). What does everyone recommend?
