Those swollen trunks really add a LOT of weight to this palm, making 'bringing-in/out' difficult after a few years! Been there. Maybe if I had a sun-room with a door to a patio, it would not be such a chore.

They carry these in Fresno also. Along with massive dypsis lutescens, howea, wodyetia and archontophoenix.

Maybe I should get one.

Josue, trying to figure out your point of reference for that comment. I know Howeas are probably tender there, but surely at least Archontophoenix grow in Fresno?

I said it that way because those species, with the exception of archontophoenix, are generally not long-term plants here and would only be successful in the best of micro-climates. Howea will grow under canopy, but if they live to outgrow the canopy, they are damaged by inland sun exposure and winter frost. Wodyetia can survive several years until a major freeze event wipes them out. Dypsis lutescens, as well, can survive with overhead protection for a number of years.

Stan is familiar with our inland climate so he would understand the surprise at having those species (in large sizes) at a big box store like that. You would expect to find those species in Southern California, and in cities on the Northern Californian coast, but definitely not inland.

In the bay area King Palms and Howea's are fine..take hits now and then...but fine for decades overall. D.lutescens to do well here ( survive!) is for experts. Otherwise,dont bother. Foxtail palms? Hayward is too cool..but I know somebody is growing them in Santa Clara- and Celedine Plumeria...they get enough summer heat,and SC is almost as winter dry as soucal.

In Fresno,I've seen photos of nice -big- Bizmarckia's and trunking Majesty palms. Gallo Winery in Modesto has a huge covered arbor entrance and they are growing Howea's and dwarf Phoenix I read. It sounds like a smaller version of the Balboa park lattice house.

Josue knows best about Fresno..but I think he's right that Howea are just too much trouble in the average yard there. Besides, he's got that great heat to grow Bismarckia,Dypsis decipiens,D.baronii...lots of other options.

I never did get the bottles. Too much of a hassle to winter indoors..or have them die on the porch. I would rather have a nice Cycad that is very happy and never needs to be moved!

Most people who do that successfully? Have a sunroom..or at least an enclosed porch..where it can be 20f warmer on a sunny winters day.

I have stairs!..only bedroom windows. Not a recipe for ease or long term.
