This is not landscaping but, painting your front door a bright color (any color you love) will cheer the front entrance.

No. I would add lower level plants in front on both sides. Depends on your lighting and zone but Use a couple of ornamental grass in front of what you already have, some hostas, hydrangea, etc. Have you ever used the gardenweb.com portion of houzz? The people there are amazing and there is a forum for just about any plant you can think of.

I would remove the stones. They are too casually placed and do not look right against your formal house. You could then expand the beds forward and add a layer of flowering perennials and annuals to provide color and then mulch those gardens. The shrubs could stay in the background, just prune them all to the same size. You have awkward open spots on both ends of the steps where they don't run the full length of the brick. Those areas would look like nice planted with a slow growing upright or conical evergreen type shrub.

I would try shearing the boxwoods first in straight lines to complement the formal geometry of your home. I think they will look great. I don't think the big rocks work - not sure why they are there but they look too cottage like to my eye. Bright front door with more colour punch on shutters would be great.

Mina, I would leave the shutters as is. I have read that it is more appropriate to have your door and your shutters different colors. Also check out your local nursery for advice on plants. You need to insure that whatever you plant is right for your gardening zone and also that the mature size of your plant will not be too big for your space.
