Raised bed mix - something simple?

last modified: 9 years ago

Hi all,

I'm going the raised bed route this year after disappointing in-ground results last year. The bed is 14 ' x 4' x 8 " = 37.3 cubic feet.. I dont have easy access to compost and this amount of volume could get expensive. I'm trying to find a dirt solution that is $200 or less. I read everywhere about getting "compost" but that's just not an option where I live, which is urban. Even if it was around, I dont own a vehicle that would be able to transport it.

My thoughts are Miracle Grow Garden Soil (2/3) and Spagum Peat Moss (1/3). Maybe a few bags of black cow composted manure on the top layer. Does anyone have any advice?

I also saw Miracle Grow sells a raised bed soil mix but dont know if this is a gimmick or worth it. I also don't know if this type of soilless mix would be good for more than a year.

I'm a raised bed novice so any advice would be great, thx!
