white X on "carissa dwarf holly's

When we bought about 12 3 gallon dwarf holly's, there seemed to be like water spots on them. When they get wet, it goes away, but when it dries, the light colored spots come back. Enclosed are three pictures of them.

The old leaves still have the white residue on them, but some of the new leaves lower down and up the stalks are getting them too.

I sprayed them w Malathion today 2tlbs per gallon, per instructions. I cannot remember the exact name of these holly's, but I think they are dwarf Carissa holly's.

If you know what the white residue is, or what to treat with and how often, pls let me know? If it's another variety, I am all ears too.

Am curious.....what insect pest are you dealing with that requires a heavy duty insecticide?

Hollies are hosts of powdery mildew, a disease that resembles your pictures. Do some Googling and see if you think it's a match.

I've followed the progression of the leaves and have sometimes noticed very, very small white spec's fly off the holly scrubs.

I did google white powdery mildew for holly's and the pics of all of them seem to have more of a raised look to the leaves, while what I have is very stuck or close on the leaves. I guess my next option is to bring into a specialty gardening store, but was hoping someone here knew exactly what it was...thank you very much.

you bought them and they came with the spots ..?????

i would have presumed the supplier had sprayed them with something ...

try not to love them to death .. ignore them.. except for proper water.. for the rest of the year ...

Bought them last fall in 2016....I too thought they were a spray of some sort and they rubbed off when he took his fingers across the leaves...
