A small scale pattern, geometric or fleur de lis, would work better, with the figures the size of your thumb. You are in Europe?

Found a nice Scottisch picture with flag and all. (But it is privat.) Gives an idea though.

I really like the carpet with the current wall color. I would use art to add some punch. It is much easier to change than wallpaper. I think it is a beautiful space.

I tried to do a little mock up for you to show the wall paper and the carpeted stairs. The tool is not friendly but this gives you some idea of the two patterns together and I superimposed a mirror. If you do the wallpaper, I think I would do the wood trim on the inside of the stairs nearest the carpet in the pale sage green from the wallpaper. That would provide a bridge between the wallpaper and the carpeting. Perhaps a aged gold mirror might work well too. Just depends on your vision.

With your rustic looking floors and the Tartan (which I really like), I would use a less delicate/formal wallpaper and keeping it fairly simple will make the foyer feel larger and then you could add a natural fiber runner, which would be really attractive. It may be the photo, but if your railing and spindles are cream, I would go with a crisp white, to bring a bit of crispness. If it were me though, I would skip wallpaper, lighten your paint color which will make your foyer feel larger and brighter and add interest by your accessories, art, a mirror. Ignore me if I'm completely off your design ideas. Good luck.

Could you post more photos of the entire area? That might help. Right now we just have a tiny snippet of the stairs.

I would be inclined to go with grasscloth wallpaper, I like the rich brown. Then add some art. I admire your courage in the tartan, looks great. Tartan and toile wallpaper is popular, to me I like the grasscloth

I think you could use the coordinating pattern, kind of small Greek key look in either the coral or the sage green on the wall in the right side. Lovely!

Grasscloth in a high traffic area, is subject to dents and bruises. I know wallpaper would be too, but grasscloth is just too delicate for the look of the plaid IMO. I like grasscloth, but this isn't the setting for it.

Hi again, yes a couple more pics but there isnt much more to it...i need radiator covered, also the pics etc i have for walls need replacing as they dnt tie in. Hi Dee...sorry have to put my 2 cents in...the wallpapers are much to heavy for your home...I love the plaid but putting this heavy printed wallpaper with it is going to really give it an old look...keep it light and with a much larger pattern..these prints are much to close to the size of the plaid carpet..

Love #2 and it goes with the style you are liking as well. It will look dramatic and wonderful. You will need some good lighting in the space though, so look to upgrade the entry chandelier and hope you can find a small entry table and put a lamp on it too. Nice choices, but #2 works really well.

Maybe a open large vine pattern....

I do think I like the "thistle" one I posted a while ago though. Just depends on the look you want. Scottish would want the thistle for sure! I can hear the bagpipes now! lol

This Schumacher wallpaper would be very nice....Colors work well with your carpet....not sure on pattern size compared to your carpet print but worth looking at...print should be larger or smaller than pattern in carpet to make this work.

Here is a thistle with birds wallpaper ...I like the brown in it with your plaid carpet....has a lot of neutral space in the print..this will keep it looking light not heavy...Good contrast pattern..

Out of all that you posted, I agree with #2 on the first post. I think it coordinates best with the carpet. You might consider lightening up the wall color of the other walls so it doesn't get too dark.

Yes thats the worry katinpatadise! I have table lamp and plans fir new ceiling lights...when i get round to it!

Extra lighting will certainly help. I hope you'll post pictures once you've made a decision and completed the project!

Dee-what I prefer about your wallpaper choices is that little bit of pink/coral you match to your tartan. (I didn't care for the blue floral you post so many pictures of. uh oh) Is there one you especially like so far?

I totally understand wanting that shabby Chic look but plaid usually is not associated with Shabby Chic decor or dark colors...everything that you are choosing is very traditional English style....I think adding a more modern more pattern would give a more eclectic style and keep it from looking old....maybe you are wanting a more eclectic bohemian look..??? Maybe start looking at very dark wallpapers with large patterens??

I don't know just talking out loud trying to understand what look you are really trying to accomplish...do you have any inspiration images you like?

Yes Dee I kinda thought that was your style...you need to look for much deeper bolder larger patterns..patterns that have a mod/modern or more eclectic style..

...or paint the walls a deep teal and add colorful art framed in gold hanging in the entry..
