DIY Kitchen Progress. Need Opinions!

Currently (as you can see) we're working on drywall. If it ever stops raining, we can finish installing windows. I really could use some opinions on shelving: length and spacing for our DW/Corner sink wall.

We're planning on installing floating shelves (1.5" cherry) using the threaded rod method. Originally, I wanted to go all the way to the window for max storage. But I think visually it would be unappealing both for balance and how it would run into the windows. The entire length of the wall is 90" (to the door) but now I"m thinking about doing 48" . I mocked it up in paint, but I'm a bit challenged with it.

I'd be storing on it: frequently used glassware, cookbooks, probably some bar type stuff (maybe some liquors, mixing stuff) we're not big liquor drinkers, but just some necessities for entertaining. I'm also leaning toward raising the lowest shelf so I can install stemware racks for my wine glasses (yes big wine drinker) but I'm never had them, so I'm unsure about that as well.

I think I'd like to put some plants or something visually attractive behind the sink that won't obscure the windows. Side note: just realized I put my electrical boxes too high, screwing up my window apron trim sizing (ugh, DIY errors). Also, we're doing this in cherry to match our cabinetry so if I don't need more shelving, that's a bonus, as it's pretty beaucoup bucks when we're already over budget. ahahahahha.

Would love some ideas or opinions as I need to get my order in for the cherry and the threaded rod so when we are finished drywalling and hubby is finished mudding I am ready to drill for the threaded rod etc.

I'd need to see what's under your shelving. To me, proportion is everything.

What is the box that you painted on next to the shelving?

As a fellow DYI'er, I think that you are way ahead of yourself. First lower the electrical box if you can or move it the center of those windows. That would visually drive me insane to have a box in the apron.Then patch the hole.

Wait until you have the lower cabinets or a mock up with cardboard boxes in to decide about the shelving. If I was putting in just shelving there, I would want them centered and longer then 48". I would think a minimum of 72" for balance. It depends on what you have planned in that square.

Also think about what will be happening under those shelves before putting in a wine glass rack. Are appliances going there? Will prep be done there? Will those glasses hanging down drive you insane because they are in the way or your afraid that they might break.

Hmmmm that is very true. I do tend to jump ahead of myself. My issues with the proportions are because there will be a corner sink there with a stack of drawers and then a dw.

I actually was thinking about putting some artwork or some plants behind the corner sink. But I also see best with the stuff actually there so I guess I'll have to defer some. Good point about moving the electrical boxes. It's making my skin itch just thinking about the apron.

Shelving can be done last. But if you need to order/build them, I would do a mock up with cardboard for the bases, then have someone hold up varying lengths to see what appeals to you. If you want art work there, buy it first, hang it then mock up. What if it's something you love and the proportions don't work. If it's plants how will they be placed? On a shelf? Baskets? Pots? Lots of different ways to put up plants especially if you are diying. Figure out the square - then the shelving will fall into place with what looks right to you. Shelving will drive you insane too if they aren't the right proportion.

Move that electrical box!! *smile*
