I have had so many Terra Cotta pots over the years and some had cracked. I break them up and use the pieces with the concave side facing upwards over wholes. I used to use the irregular shaped pieces of Lava rock over them, as allows the water to run out.

I have been using shade cloth that I buy in the garden center of Lowes for 20 plus years. It lasts forever, I can reuse it & I have never had a problem of it getting clogged up.

i've used the plastic canvas for years and have not had major issues ...

This looks like the stuff you put under area rugs on a slippery floor Hardwood, Lino, etc. to keep it in place.

I think this would break down over time as it is quite soft. The one sold here.

I use small rocks at the bottom of large pots. For smaller pots, I use (& reuse) lightweight, open weave tulle fabric, used for crafts, weddings, mosquito nets, etc. I cut it into circles / squares to fit the bottom of the pots ... Love the stuff for this purpose.

You can also place a single layer of a napkin square at the bottom of the pot. It is biodegradable and by the time it degrades, the soil will have compacted sufficiently so as not to seep out the drainage holes. I've used this, as well.

In my "regular" potted plants, I use dropped magnolia tree leaves similar to your napkin, Maria. My magnolia tree gives me plenty and they are the perfect thing! I flip them upside down and fold them in various places to make them fit perfectly in the pot bottoms. I then put in my mulch and potting mix. Works great! The leaf does not seal the bottom of the pot - still allows water to run through - and as the leaf breaks down, the plant's roots have taken over to hold the soil.

I've got tulle here in the house - I buy it by the yard for dish scrubbies (just wad it up - no sewing necessary) - so I might try that! Thanks!
