Identifying branches to cut off

How to do this? Should I cut off branches that have no new leaves this year? I have a hard time identifying dead branches because of the grey color of the living bark looks dead to me, but it is not. The branches with leaves and those without leaves seem to be very similar looking in color.

How to identify dead branches?

You can cut at 1-inch away from the tip of the branch you suspect is dead. If the cut shows no life, then continue to cut more from the branch.

Thanks so much.

Well there were leaves missing from some of these branches or browning even before winter. Some folks on the forum said that I had some fungus due to nutrient deficiency so I checked my soil and it was too alkaline. I have been trying to lower the pH gradually.
