I too am an DIY-er & water proof screen is an ideal thought. I'm going to use fiberglass "marine" repair screen with "marine epoxy glue". It's not flexible after the glue hardens but hey, it's going to lay flat anyway, right? Place the netting/screen on aluminum foil (so the screen doesn't stick to what's under it) then apply the epoxy glue. Then place the rocks on the glued area. Not sure how long to let it sit before moving it, guess I'll figure that out as I experiment with the whole thing. I'll let you all know how it goes after the 15th of Nov. Wish me luck

That's funny. I seen this the other day and I am a D.I.Y. kind of girl , and thought this would be super easy to do especially having access to the rocks but what to use for putting the rocks on ? Maybe home depot or your local hardware store could be helpful with this question. Good Luck with it.

I am such a DIY disaster that I can envision how hilarious my attempt at this would turn out. I'd probably wind up accidentally glue gunning rocks to my floor.

I think if you were to glue the rocks to something it would have to be water proof ---maybe old screen? Not metal but maybe plastic? I would take the edges and turn them under two times and sew it. This way it wouldn't unravel. Good luck.

I think the epoxy would stick to the aluminum foil, I would use parchment paper. And go easy on the epoxy, a little bit goes a long way.

Wonder how it would turn out if you applied the stones to that rubbery shelf liner (I guess black) with 100% silicone caulk(clear)? Would that make it waterproof and flexible? Well, I guess there's only one way to find out!

I made a table runner and toilet tank topper by hot gluing dollar store rocks to the rubbery shelf liner and put felt on the bottom. I didn't want the glue to go all the way through the felt. I don't know that I will make a door mat, as I don't think it would hold up.

It comes on a mesh backing that you could attach with glue or needle and thread to a piece of fabric or rubber. Good luck!
