I bet its pokeweed. Just small ones. I think. They get about 10 feet tall and grow purple berries. Yahoo it and see if I'm right.

Not pokeweed; the leaves are wrong, and the roots are not straight down and fat, like a carrot. I could see one having a crooked root, but not so many, and they are never that thin.

yea I could understand that. Just thought it might be a small one. but those do look more like runners than the big ol root of a pokeweek perhaps

Goldenrod? Just a guess. Leaves look a little rounder then what I deal with, but the reddish color looks familiar.

The plant in the photo has opposite foliage so it can't be Goldenrod.

Or Phytolacca. Looks like a baby tree to me.

I hadn't thought of a tree, but you are right, the plants could be root sprouts, assuming that those roots are, in fact, runners. I had gotten stuck on herbaceous plants that throw out runners,

I didn't forget about this post! I am waiting for another one to pop up, I did a good job weeding I guess that it is taking a while to get another to come up. When you say you want a side view of the leafs, more than in the 2nd picture I posted?

Not a side view of the leaves. A side view of the whole plant while it's growing. Also a view of the top surface of the leaves.

Where in the world are you? If in the United States have you been to your state universities Cooperative Extension Service office to ask them for help in identifying this?

My guess is a Helianthus species. You might get a more specific id on the Name that Plant Forum.

I am thinking Helianthus as well.
