Pothos Problem Child

Hi guys,

I need a little troubleshooting help. About six weeks ago I setup a little garden corner in my office. I tried to choose hardy plants that thrive in low light conditions. I have:

Diffenbachia "Camille"

Fittonia "Frankie"

Sansieviera "Futura Superba"

Pothos "Marble Queen"

Peace Lily "Platinum Mist"

My office doesn't have a window, so the plants have two LED plant lights (red and blue spectrum) that are on a timer to make sure they get daily light even on weekends or when I work at home. They get watered 2-3 times per week with filtered water using the 'flush' method (The Sansieviera is watered less frequently). Meaning, I water them until it flows through to the drain holes. I then give them about fifteen minutes to absorb any additional water before dumping the excess from the dish. The Fittonia and Pothos also get supplementary mistings.

So far I have only fed them once using diluted MiracleGro Indoor plant food, which is 1-1-1.

Everyone seems to be doing great except the silly Pothos. It keeps popping up with brown edges along the leaves. At first I thought it was low humidity, but I've been trying everything I can think of to fix it with no luck. Help, please!

I think you're burning it, it's not a plant that wants direct light, I mean the Pothos.

That Fittonia is likely to suffer from that too, it's an understory plant, not for direct light either, also needs terrarium (or bathroom) humidity.

I wouldn't give the Peace Lily direct light either.

Nice idea & pretty plants, but I think their needs differ from what you're expecting. I doubt they want or need supplementary light, especially not in an office, where plants can thrive under just office light.

I've bloomed a mini Peace Lily in my office, no windows, just office light. Have a Schefflera there too, also thriving.

I also think twice a week is a lot of watering, maybe too much.

I'd re-think this, I think (IMO) in this case, less is more, this all seems like overkill to me. Guess I would have tried the set up w/out the lights first. Sorry, but you are asking opinions & troubleshooting.

Hmm, okay. Just to clarify I don't use the overhead fluorescent lighting in my office. I use two lamps. When I'm not here, which is 4 days out of seven, the lights are off completely. So, without the supplemental lighting, which is on the 'low' setting, the plants would be in complete darkness during that time period. I can adjust the timer so that the lights are not on when I'm here, but I'd be concerned about the plants not getting *any* light the majority of the week.

Ah, okay, so I was over-correcting. I'll back off the water. When I check, I'm gently wiggling a finger down knuckle-deep in the pot. The plants are never just swamp-wet, but they have been kept damp because my initial concern was 'not enough water.'

They need to dry out a little more between waterings.

Knuckle deep doesn't tell you much about how moist things are deeper in the pot.

Get a wooden down and sharpen the ends.

Stick all the way into the soil to the bottom. Pull it out immediately and inspect.

If it comes out dark, damp and stained with soil, don't water.

Check every couple days and water again when the dowel comes out clean and dry.

I have that same pothos in a southern window and it loves it there. I would be reluctant to grow it without sunlight. Actually, I feel really bad putting plants in dark corners where they get no indirect or direct light.

I know people label plants "low light" and say certain plants can live in dark spaces, but I've found that even those plants like a little light. A room with no windows at all and not even flourescent light? I'd be very reluctant to place a plant in those conditions....

that said, pothos definitely don't need to be watered that frequently, even in full sun.

eta: they would benefit from the fluorescent lights. Perhaps leave them on sometimes when you are in the office...

I agree Lauren, my marble queen gets full sun and it gets watered maybe once a week.

    Beautiful!! So pretty!

Here is mine that gets full sun. It's still a wee thing:
