Help with living room

Our living room looks dated now. I also think we have too much pattern (see photo). Looking to replace the sofas with new ones but can't find what I have in mind - curved sofas - like parts of a circle. Please suggest sources for sofas in Northern California.

All you did was move furn to other end of room. Keep sofa by window but move move out 3 ft add other sofa dirty across from it. Coffee table between. You should see border around area rug. It's to define space not cover entire floor. Place two red chairs next to each other no table between. They will look at wall. Where you will put large painting, I here. Some bog potted palms in ceramic pots try black. In corners by window and corner by stairs. If you had a long Buffett in black or other color would look nice centered on long wall art or mirror above it. If Buffett is on wall can go smaller art. Tone area rug dn. make it more black and creams, traditional. You might get away with 6 x9.

Take dn drapes. One thing that is so dated. Just a print panels each end only, no valance just black rod. Print black with cream trellis design would work. Would change whole room without buying furn. You can be traditional without being stuffy.

we are currently doing 2 sofas that will be facing each other. I have attached a picture of the frame.
Hi Travisinteriors, while I like many of your suggestions, and will try rearranging as you suggest, but the room is too long and not wide enough to put the sofas facing each other. Also there is nothing like a fireplace to use to place the two parallel sofas relative to.

Will consider slipcovers while I look for a new sofa. Will check Z gallerie for a coffee table. Thanks for the tips!

Hi Artistic Upholstery, are you folks in Santa Clara? If so, I'll stop by.
Okay, agree with Travis interiors. This looks much better. Will continue to address drapes, etc.
Ps. Still need to center the rug, but will go with this arrangement until I get everything new. Thanks guys!

not liking the position of chairs, I would try moving them so that they either face each other or they are together (next to each other) or just place somewhere else in your home.

Can't put the chairs together - not enough room except along the wall with the pictures.
please try---chairs don't look right where they are now, do you need them in there?

I like the room much better the way it is now. I'm wondering tho, if in time, you might consider moving the rug. I know that it has sentimental value for you. I've been there, too.
Is there any way that you might find another place to put it in the house?
The small chairs look kinda like someone might trip over the chairs as he/she tries to get to the loveseat. Can you use the chairs somewhere else & just 'borrow' them from the other room when you need extra seating for company? It would probably look more balanced , with the space from the chairs cleared out a little, if you could place the small end table at 1 end of the loveseat, facing the sofa.

Travisinteriors, a small request: might you take a few seconds and type in sentences? Speed counts for little, if readers can't follow?
You can make a focal point by buying a large 5ft long chest. Add a very large round mirror. Something nice like sunburst at Zs. Center on big wall then place sofas facing each other. Large round coffee table between. Nothing else .
Sorry studio, about incomplete sentence, didn't know I was back in high school English. Will try to do better.
I'm not trying to insult; it is much appreciated.
Sorry studio. Not being rude. Guess I need to eat something.

Good ideas from travisinteriors, Travis, you just need to present ideas here as you would if presenting your portfolio to a client. Since so many dilemmas are from newbies and amateurs, things need to be spelled out.. We're in no hurry but want to understand you and get it right.

haha, I hope your clients are not like ours, no matter how many ways you present anything to them, they are all still confused and can't make up their minds>>>LOL last week we had to shut down job, ground up all concrete home in Del Mar, CA. Cost on home about 5M, not including land, nice client but extremely confused.

Work and other stuff tied me up yesterday, but I will reposition the chairs or remove them completely today and post a pic. The rest of your suggestions will be implemented very slowly so bear with me. :)
Please take a look. Can I keep the chairs as shown? Need the seating and really don't have anywhere else to put them.
looks like my living room. too small to have a lot of furniture.
From above the chairs looked better before, although the one on the left looked like it might block entry to the room. Is there room behind the right sofa to put the chairs facing away with a small table between them? You can pull them in when needed.
I liked the initial set up without the tables and accessories that were dated. However rug should be centered ON the room and sofa away from wall at least half foot. Chairs should sit straight not angled and a rectangular table would do wonders. Sofas facing each other beg for a console to be on back of the one facing away from the viewer. The French chairs are nice and light, great instead of the tulip ones.

getting closer now, try and place them closer to each other. I think maybe not in an angle, straight. and let's look again.
Will place the chairs together. Someone suggested that I put a sofa table behind the long sofa. Will try that too and post pic again tomorrow.
I like your room a lot, doesn't need much changing , if I would change anything it would be the curtain valance ( to remove it to let more light through) and the curtains.

Some curved sofas here below from Houzz pages, carpet idea ( in second pic) too is nice if you wish to have a change:

Great job! One last thing-If you put one large painting behind the 2 chairs instead of the current 2 it should unify the room. Now with the symmetry it has a split down the middle. Something with the colors of the sofas and rug would pull everything together.
Finding art that big is a challenge. Also, I am traditional (in case you have not noticed) and so that makes it even more difficult. But will look for sure. And will change the drapes too - hate the cornice.

But thanks everyone - you all were so helpful and I learnt a thing or two here. Love Houzz!
Your room looks much better. Ever thought of taking your curtains and cornice down for good? I did that in my living room and discovered my windows were beautiful in themselves and added much more to the room than curtains did. If you need privacy or sun protection, think simple shades. When you replace the sofas, think about two love seats or very short sofas, both simple lines. Your room is small, so furniture needs to be small and light feeling. In a living room a regular sized sofa is unnecessary. You don't sleep in there and they only are good for two people cause no one likes to be in the center. I would get a very large coffee table that all the seating could reach, keep the sofa table and put lamps on it, and get rid of the rest of the tables. Add a floor lamp for the other sofa. If you decide to get a chest or buffet, one or two lamps could be put on it. Your chairs are right. I like them sitting together, straight, with no table. If you intend to keep the rug, you need to bring some dark colors in above the floor, in art, upholstery fabric, wood, pillows or throws, but just enough to tie the room in to the rug. An ebony chest, as someone suggested, would be lovely. A dark wood frame around a glass top would be nice for a coffee table. For art, a mirror reflects light and makes a room seem larger with reflections. I would understate most of the things in the room to show off that beautiful rug. Enjoy the process and send us a picture when you are done.

Thanks Diane. Yes, plan to remove the drapes and replace with simple panels. But I will still need the sheers or the inside of the room will be visible from the street.

Regarding the sofa, was thinking of getting a regular one and two occasional chairs. The room is 12 by 14 feet.

I have three mirrors on the entry wall, dining room wall and at top of the staircase landing, that are all visible from the entry and the living room, so am hesitant to add another mirror to replace the pictures, but lets see. I might do that and replace the hall mirror with art.

Will post pictures again once I make additional changes. Thanks!

Shabnam, this piece may not be strictly "traditional" but not too modern either and the colors may work for you. It will bring more interest to your space and become the focal point. It can be printed in large size and framed in a more conservative frame with golden finish.
We can also change its proportions if you prefer a horizontal piece. You can check out our ideabook "Artwork Customized" to see examples of image resizing... Raisa

A couple more ideas....for window privacy, you can also put UV film rather than curtains on your window glass. You can get it in three different thicknesses, up to the point where you can't see through from outside, like a one-way glass. It might be a good idea even if you do have curtains to protect your rug from fading. Also, a bench the size of a piano bench might work at the end opposite the chairs if you need seating. And you're right, you have enough mirrors. I'm currently looking for art for a tall wall, also. I'll keep an eye out for unusual things. One idea I had was to take some memorabilia or heirlooms and put them in a huge shadow box frame, like a dress or piece of silk, etc.
Hi Diane: two questions for you. Where can I find the UV film you suggested? Would like to try that out. Second, what are shades when talking about window coverings?

I added a throw to one of the sofas as I had it. I can get another one if you think this helps. Take a look at the pic. Also am adding a picture of the dining room that is right off the living room to give you a sense of the surrounding space.

Havie you considered changing out the couch pillows. The fringe really dates them. Recovering them would be a snap. Maybe even having the fringe removed would help, or doing that to a couple and chosing something rich and colorful for the others pillows. I agree with the comment above, the 2 artwork pieces are not holding the room together. I love the large gold with white flowers in one of the pictures above. They are still separate pieces, yet it works as one large piece.
I'll try to get rid of the fringe and cover a couple of pillows. The problem is that the sofa is too pale. Any pillow that is close to the rug is too strong a contrast to the sofas - ugh! But will try. Thanks!
love the sofas and chairs but the rug has to go its to heavy for the room go with a light floral or design with lighter colors an d use lighter brighter colors for the pillows. find colors you love and youlle never get sick ofthem

A shade is flat fabric (cloth, reed, paper, etc.) with a roller, usually at the top that allows you to roll down or up to any level for privacy or protection from drafts or sun. They come as room darkening or light filtering. The room darkening type is especially good for bedrooms. They can also be custom made with a fabric of your choice. As for the window film, i looked it up on the Internet under UV Shield window film. There are several manufacturers. Both 3M and Vista have good sites. They refer you on the site to dealers and installers. You can also install it yourself. It is a film that is applied to the inside of your windows that keeps out ultra violet rays that fade room interiors, stop skin effects from the sun, give privacy, get rid of glare and save on utility bills..You can get shades at any drapery shop, Penny's, Sears, and most home improvement stores. The film is at home improvement stores and at special installers shops.

I'm sending in sections. I lost it all the other night just as I was pushing "send." I like the throw. If you think you need more color you could throw it over the top and spread it out a bit more. Don't worry about your pale sofas. You just need to bring some dark up into the room to tie it to the rug. Wood, in a dark stain or black would help. Also, throws, pillows, art, flowers and plants, or a print on your fabric. Don't go too far, contrast works well for energy, too dark would make the room heavy and depressing. A black buffet, as someone suggested would really be nice. The idea is to keep it as light as possible. I love the plate you put behind the sofa. Try putting it on a short stack of books to raise it up above the pillows. That's a nice arrangement, but it needs to be larger. I'd also mix the light and dark in it. I think you have the idea. Don't worry about the fringe. I just put fringe on some pillows for my sofa, two with fringe, two with cord and one self welted. You just need to keep things fairly simple to fit in with current fashion.

You could put a small red or blue pillow on your seating, maybe around 8 inches or as a lumbar pillow.
Hi Diane: yes learnt that Lowes and Home Depot have the UV film. Will get some this weekend and try it out.

Will raise the plate behind the sofas and try adding colored pillows.

Incidentally found a sofa and occasional chairs that I like at Thomasville. Am attaching photos. Still pretty formal but that is how we are. They will upholster with fabric of your choice. So will be looking into that this weekend.
Those are beautiful, especially the chair. I could see the chair fabric in your room if it is gray or the same tone as your rug. Just make sure that it isn't large. The smaller the furniture, the larger your room will look. Stop in at a Pier I or another inexpensive place and get an assortment of colors of pillows to try at home. Then you can take back what you don't like. Red, blue, gray, plain or patterned could be tried. It might even give you an idea on you're upholstery. If you buy two couches, I would keep them the same size. Have fun. It's getting exciting now.
Don't apologize for liking traditional. A home should reflect who you are. You can keep it young and lively by sprinkling in a few modern ideas or colors, like an abstract painting. on your art, it should be just as wide as the furniture in front of it.
