Like almost all hostas, it will drop in price over the next few years. When Whirlwind first came out, it was $150 for a small single division. The next year it was $75 for a small single division, then $50, then $40, then it became widely available and was sold for $10-15 for a nice double division.

Believe it or not, when Golden Tiara was introduced, it was $250 for a single, and there was a 2 year waiting list. It very quickly dropped to a much more reasonable price, and now you can buy a gallon pot with 20 or more divisions for $10.

This one should be less expensive next year, and drop even further in the year or 2 after that. It is very showy, but there is always something new that comes long, and the market for the last 'big new thing' drops off sharply.

The most extreme hosta price drop is probably Humpback Whale, which sold at auction for somewhere around $3200 for a single division. It was not offered again for many years, but finally was put into tissue culture, and now you can buy one for $15-20 dollars.

I must admit, though, that getting rid of a spouse for $75 seems like quite a reasonable deal.....

The higher the price of a hosta is directly related to how frou-frou it is and how fast it will die in the car on the way home.....

mikgag, you're right. Especially since them hostas have a tendency to die on me anyway. Some seem to grow right back into the ground and then vanish. Not the most expensive ones though - they are doing fine. But you never know.

That is a beauty! But that's a lot of white. I'd like to know if it comes back looking like that. I had to check out how much 75 euros come to in dollars..... $84. I see why you left it behind, but now we can all dream about it.

I will have to have my friend see about picking up one of these for me, down right beautiful.

Just a comment on Humpback Whale- Price was a tad higher and there were 4 eyes. The concept of '"Originator Stock" , as opposed to tissue culture, and several other personal factors, caused the winner to bid high. Most people are very happy when a tc plant finally comes to market, but at that time it was the only piece that had ever been taken from "Humpie" after its move from MA to MD.

hostanana--thanks for the clarification, I was thinking it was either $3200 or $3600 or somewhere in that range, but was too lazy to track down the actual figure. I had been told years ago that it was a single division, apparently by someone who didn't know either! I'm one of those people who like getting originator stock, but am not willing to pay much extra for it unless I'm buying directly from the breeder.

Very beautiful indeed. Hope it gets into a more accessible price range soon. You never know - sometimes they're almost impossible to T.C., especially those beautiful streakers.

I bought Paisley Border, which is similar, but without the white streaks. P.A. is prettier.

Is Paisley Art considered a streaked hosta?

Yes it is, I talked to Danny van Eechaute and he called it streaked. If it ever gets any cheaper I will most certainly get it.

So it probably won't do well in tissue culture. They still should get a few plants per batch. Fingers crossed it gets into under $40-$50 price range. Good luck, hope you get one.

So I went there again yesterday and I heard a German lady ask Jan van den Top for Paisley Art. He told her he didn't have it but they could certainly ask Danny van Eechaute who was there with some of his plants and I went after them. Danny didn't bring one, but he can send it. She then asked for the price and he said 75€. Still.

The woman told him she would contact him via Facebook.

I bought a Paisley Border for 12€.

Wow Cicely, that's a nice Paisley Border! Not so different from Paisley Art.

I also got PB this spring, but mine has much more green :-(
