Is the light always on at night under "dim" mode and then light up when motion is detected or is it off until motion is deteced?

Yes... or you can use as a dusk to dawn feature as well... it has an on switch

How long does battery last on full charge?

Depends, if you switch it on to use like how you would use a flashlight, a couple hours. If you use it as a motion detector should last till morning easily unless it keeps turning on due to motion during the night all night. Moderate use will last till morning.

There is no dim mode, only motion sensor.
