Best way to control scale??.

I have scale on an ornamental shrub/tree.

Lots of honey dew on the hostas underneath. Some black soot on the branches.

Tried Melathion many times seems ineffective. (Soaked branches 2 times in April to kill crawlers)

I don't care if it's organic or not. I just want them dead.....

- carbaryl
- chlorpyrifos (nursery only)
- deltamethrin
- fluvalinate
- lambda cyhalothrin
- horticultural oil
- insecticidal soap
- imidacloprid
  (only for soft scales)
- malathion
- permethrin
- pyriproxyfen
Note that these only work on the crawlers not the 'scaley' egg sacs

No help from me unless I know what kind of plant is affected, and I'd like to know what kind of scale, too.

It may depend on which type of scale, Armored or soft, you have but generally control can be achieved by applications of horticultural oils to smother the wee buggers. Now applications of "summer", or superior oils should be effective while in January applications of dormant oils should help.

Some people have used cotton swabs dipped in rubbing alcohol, Insecticidal
Soaps, and Neem oil products.

It is essential to know the kind of plant.....some are very sensitive to horticultural oil applications.
